After working as a developer for 20 years, the company I had worked for "shifted focus" on new endeavors, so I had to find a new job. Most all jobs posted today are through some contracting company.
I ended up having to "prove my value" for about 8 months until they hired me. As a contractor, I made about the same money, minus benefits, and paid time off, and no 401k. Very risky for a person to go through this, even if they are good at what they do.
In the end it all worked out... but honestly... they should have just given me a job with benefits and PTOs.
The labor market for IT is just brutal.
