Comment I'm waiting for 15" (Score 1) 38

While Razer has several 15" models... None have a THX-certified panel. I'd love to replace my Lenovo Legion as sound doesn't work under Linux (and it seems the recently released Legion models have the same issue). Can anyone tell me how well Linux tends to be supported on Razer laptops? I know there's an open source driver for controlling LED's under Linux... But what about power management, screen brightiness control, sound, etc?

I figure eventually they'll have a 15" version with a THX-certified panel and then hopefully I can move to a laptop that has working audio under the OS I'm using 95% of the time.

I'm well aware of System76, however, since they've moved to Coreboot Windows is fairly unusable on their devices, and I want to be able to play games 5% of the time. With more games moving to DX12, Linux ports are a lot better than a few years ago, but most games aren't seeing ports at all... So Windows is still a necessary evil for me.

Here's the bug filed for the Lenovo Legion audio issue in case anyone is curious.

You run FreeBSD on your Razer laptop? How's that working out? How well are Linux/FreeBSD supported? While I don't want this 14", I'm hoping they'll release a 15" that also has a THX certified panel, and I'm primarily a Linux user.

I've also used FreeBSD since the late 90's, but every time I've tried it on a laptop... It wasn't the greatest experience (no suspend, etc).

This has been my experience so far as well. I had to do some tuning, but the game is running overall pretty well for me at 4k with an RTX 3090. I have pretty good specs, but mainly I wanted to bring up how surprisingly non buggy the game has been for me so far on the first day. I found my car to be hovering slightly above the ground and the game crashed on me after just one of many deaths... Honestly, I'm pretty shocked this is all I've encountered so far. Half Life 2 was far worse for me a month after release with frequent crashes where the game locked while the audio would be stuck in a loop. Maybe I'm REALLY lucky... But my initial impression so far is that the day 1 patch has probably fixed a lot of the issues the reviewers were encountering prior to launch.

Your computer isn't yours anymore? No shit. But it doesn't have to be that way. Freedom isn't free, there's a hefty fuckin' fee:

But if you can buy Apple products, this probably isn't that bad for you anyway especially if you go with a Blackbird based system.

Open source motherboard, open source firmware, open source BMC. You currently have a choice Linux, FreeBSD, and OpenBSD.

Personally, my big complaint are all the weird kernel bugs in Linux that are ignored because it's a niche platform... But you'll completely own your computer.

Comment Just ThinkPads? (Score 1) 32

Is this only related to ThinkPads? I have had a Lenovo Legion 7i for about 1.5 months now, and when I updated to 2004... It definitely gave me trouble. Windows automatically rolled back the update... I immediately tried again and it worked. There's no biometric login on this laptop, but Lenovo Vantage is definitely a thing here.

As a side note, my primary OS is Linux, which works pretty great on this thing... Other than not being able to get sound from the speakers, which is kind of a big deal: https://bugzilla.kernel.org/sh...

Sabrent has gen4 NVMe SSD's up to 2TB.

As far as I can tell... Their Q series seem to maybe be a cheaper line like the Samsung Evo series.

The regular Rocket series (no Q) seems to be roughly analogous to Samsung's Pro line AFAIK. I believe Samsung still has the better performance here, but the sizes are great, the prices are decent, and the endurance/performance are at least better than acceptable.

I've been considering a shift away from spinning storage in my desktop so I've been doing some research, however, my research is still in the early stages so someone may be able to correct me on some of this.
