"...they are making an example out of an historic, legitimate, useful and well-known website. This is a prophetic glimmer of the coming war against pure free speech- the internet."

A flagrant lie on your part, the site was run by known criminals who not only profited from distributing copyrighted material, but even stole said material from their own customers who used the site to store personal files.

Try ars technica for the real story, http://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/news/2012/01/why-the-feds-smashed-megaupload.ars

Megaupload is/was run by scum, but they appear to be your kind of scum, so I guess that explains your self righteous indignation over the bust.

They're not actually a true usenet provider, but provide easy access to pirated material from usenet feeds. Their big mistake was to categorize and organize copyrighted material for distribution and so effectively behave as a distributor. Normally the movie/music industry ignores individual file downloading, but when you get into the business of being a distributor without permission of the content owner's, your asking for trouble.

And before anyone brings it up, no, it's not like Google.

Very sorry to see you go. Way back in the hot grits days, Slashdot was literally the only forum that I'd read every day without fail and for a long time the only place I had ever deemed worthy of actually registering an account with.

I hope that you'll continue to find the time to read Slashdot, I'd feel better knowing that CmdrTaco is at least keeping a watchful eye on the old place

Thank you and best of luck for the future.

Bullshit. Anonymous works for nothing but their own self interest. Censorship has always been their weapon of choice, they attack anyone that disagrees with them and pick their battles to promote their own egos.

Anonymous would happily through you under a bus for the lulz if it suited them and you're an idiot if you think they serving any sort of noble purpose.

So Zediva thought they could purchase a single DVD and re-broadcast the content to multiple customers, essentially relying on a very loose interpretation of the first sale doctrine and avoid paying the same licensing fees as Netflix or Amazon.

If the MPAA didn’t take them to court, then Amazon or Netflix or Redbox, hell the entire legitimate broadcast industry would have.

Hard to believe I know, but Sony's console is a lot less locked down than Microsoft's. Being able to use whatever hard drive I wish, Sony's willingness to allow third party networks into PSN and not being charged a fee to use my own internet connection made the PS3 a clear choice for me. I also like having my online purchases tied to my account and not the console, as well as Sony's rather liberal 5 console install limit (great for game sharing, something Microsoft frowns on)

As well, at least I can be sure my PS3 will be available when I need it. Microsoft knowingly sold defective Xbox 360s for over 3 years until a class action lawsuit forced them to fix the problem. Doesn't make the 360 look like a very good investment to me...

Since when does "jailbreaking" apply to hacking the PS3? As I've pointed out before, none off the DCMA exceptions laid down by the Library of Congress apply to what was done to the PS3. Do we call any hacking attempt a "jailbreak" now?

If Jailbreakme.com released a new firmware for the iPhone that allowed unlimited free access to the iTunes store and let you mess with other peoples iTunes accounts, then you bet Apple would sic the lawyers on them. Only then could you correctly draw any connection to the PS3 incident.

Exactly, this is textbook terrorism. Very sad to see so many Slashdotters supporting an un-democratic, hateful and downright fascist group.

Anon/Lulsec want to destroy the open Internet and set themselves up as a dictatorship. Coverage of anon/Lulsec has had a chilling effect on many blogs & forums as well. Ars is terrified of drawing their ire and I'm sure Slashdot is being very careful not to criticize or put anon/Lulsec in a bad light for fear of reprisals.

All cops are bad? Literally? If that's the case then you must agree that all authority figures are bad, but of course that's just crazy talk.

Then again, to an anarchist all laws are unjust. Laws are a part of a civil society and so it would follow that society is bad. Thankfully no decent civilized person would believe in such tripe, correct?
