Submission + - Chinese iPod gadget turns it into a Phone (cnn.com)

Dieppe writes: A Chinese man has invented a gadget that, when connected to an Apple iPod Touch, turns it into a phone. It's being manufactured by a Chinese company, and is called the "Apple Peel 520". There are still bugs to work out, such as not having full support of 3G, lag time when making a call, and a few other annoyances. China has a black cell phone market and the iPhone is considered to be too expensive, this would be an legal alternative.

Yeah, the original poster is a MORON if he can't figure out that they did him a favor in making their own network more secure.

Comment Insulin Pumps... (Score 1) 247

My girlfriend has an insulin pump made by Medco. It has to do certain things like, if she has a certain high blood sugar level, give the right amount of insulin dose for the next hour to bring her into a normal range. If she eats, she estimates the amount of carbs she's eaten, enters in a certain dose level, and the pump calculates how much insulin she needs, based on the type of insulin she's using.

It uses a AAA battery. If the battery starts to run low, it beeps. If the battery is almost dead it beeps A LOT to let her know to change batteries.

Now... if she gets low on insulin, it will beep once or twice at approximately 10% left, and a few times at 5% left.

IF the pump runs out of insulin---THE PUMP SAYS NOTHING. No "OMG! NO INSULIN!" messages. NO WILD BEEPING! Nothing! If she somehow runs out of insulin in her sleep, she is well and truly fucked as the pump isn't going to wake her up! Nice of it to let her know when the battery is low (obviously if the battery is dead, it can't beep right?), but not so nice of it NOT to let her know when she's actually out of the life-giving fluid she needs to live.

Has it happened that she's run out of insulin and not noticed because the pump didn't say anything? Yes, it has. Luckily not when she's been asleep, but it could happen.

Good thing she doesn't have to milk a hairless cat to live, huh? Still, a little better design here might make a difference.

In the event of an accident, the airbag will crush the iPad into your face.

And that is the key reason why this should never be used. Ever. There'll be laws, and well... Frankly that really represents the end of our discussion with this "product". Want to purchase a mount for something that, WHEN you crash, will come flying at your face at 100mph? You would have been fine because the seatbelt held you, but never mind the iPad implanted in your skull.

Woman Creates 3-D Erotic Book For the Blind 113

Lisa J. Murphy has written an erotic book with tactile images for that special visually impaired porn connoisseur in your life. Tactile Mind contains explicit softcore raised images, along with Braille text and photos. From the article: "A photographer with a certificate in Tactile Graphics from the Canadian National Institute for the Blind, Murphy learned to create touchable images of animals for books for visually impaired children. Then she realized that there was a lack of such books for adults only. 'There are no books of tactile pictures of nudes for adults, at least the last time I looked around,' says Murphy. 'We're breaking new ground. Playboy has [an edition with] Braille wording, but there are no pictures.' She says that while we live in a culture saturated with sexual images, the blind have been 'left out.'"

15-Year-Old Student Discovers New Pulsar 103

For the second time in as many years, a student has made a discovery while participating in the Pulsar Search Collaboratory (PSC), a joint program between the National Radio Astronomy Observatory and West Virginia University designed to get students and teachers involved in analyzing data from the Robert C. Byrd Green Bank Telescope (GBT). This time it was high school sophomore Shay Bloxton, who discovered a brand new pulsar. "For Bloxton, the pulsar discovery may be only her first in a scientific career. 'Participating in the PSC has definitely encouraged me to pursue my dream of being an astrophysicist,' she said, adding that she hopes to attend West Virginia University to study astrophysics. Late last year, another West Virginia student, from South Harrison High School, Lucas Bolyard, discovered a pulsar-like object called a rotating radio transient. His discovery also came through participation in the PSC."

Scientists To Breed the Auroch From Extinction 277

ImNotARealPerson writes "Scientists in Italy are hoping to breed back from extinction the mighty auroch, a bovine species which has been extinct since 1627. The auroch weighed 2,200 pounds (1000kg) and its shoulders stood at 6'6". The beasts once roamed most of Asia and northern Africa. The animal was depicted in cave paintings and Julius Caesar described it as being a little less in size than an elephant. A member of the Consortium for Experimental Biotechnology suggests that 99% of the auroch's DNA can be recreated from genetic material found in surviving bone material. Wikipedia mentions that researchers in Poland are working on the same problem."

Police Called Over 11-Year-Old's Science Project 687

garg0yle writes "Police in San Diego were called to investigate an 11-year-old's science project, consisting of 'a motion detector made out of an empty Gatorade bottle and some electronics,' after the vice-principal came to the conclusion that it was a bomb. Charges aren't being laid against the youth, but it's being recommended that he and his family 'get counseling.' Apparently, the student violated school policies — I'm assuming these are policies against having any kind of independent thought?"

Mars Images Reveal Evidence of Ancient Lakes 128

Matt_dk writes "Spectacular satellite images suggest that Mars was warm enough to sustain lakes three billion years ago, a period that was previously thought to be too cold and arid to sustain water on the surface, according to research published today in the journal Geology. Earlier research had suggested that Mars had a warm and wet early history but that between 4 billion and 3.8 billion years ago, before the Hesperian Epoch, the planet lost most of its atmosphere and became cold and dry. In the new study, the researchers analysed detailed images from NASA’s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, which is currently circling the red planet, and concluded that there were later episodes where Mars experienced warm and wet periods."
