Comment Re:Global warming and you. (Score 1) 895

Who cares about the global warming crowd. We need to focus on what the impacts of a warming climate are going to have on societies and prepare for them before millions (if not billions) of people are displaced or killed by changing climates. If we don't prepare for it, we are going to face incredible challenges, including regional conflicts over scarce resources and probable immigration to countries which are better off environmentally.

Seriously, we need to get out of this polar opposite argument and start looking at the practical issues which we are inevitably going to face. Who cares what caused it, we know we can predict what's probably going to happen so we need to prepare for it! To just stick our heads in the sand and do nothing is foolish and shortsighted. Because that sand might be underwater soon. (I kid, I kid...)

Then again, shortsighted foolishness is the story of the human race... So I don't have much hope.

I see your point. However, think about it this way: What would happen if Apple didn't attempt to put some kind of filter on apps in the app store? It would become a chaotic mess (even more so than it already is!).

Personally, I can see why people prefer the dictator approach to content. It's too much effort to filter out all the crap, so why not let the dictator do it?

Now, we all know that the dictator will make decisions that don't make any sense, or maybe might not be in the best interest of all of us... But the benefit we get (e.g. not having to think about what apps to get) far outweight the negatives in our information overloaded society.

BTW I'm not saying that that's what we want; as techies we are used to filtering out the crap. But this is the great unwashed masses we're talking about here.

There IS a market for devices which gives us full control, which is why you see phones like the droid doing so well. The market for devices appealing to the great unwashed masses is a little bit bigger though.r

Comment How about this (Score 1) 327

This material could be used in a remote controlled underwater robot. It could have two tanks, one the intake tank, and one the storage tank. A robotic press with this cloth attached to a metal ring would basically start at one end and go to the other. So the process would be:

1. Intake water from outside (hopefully in the middle of an oil plume)
2. Press the cloth from one end to the other through the intake tank at a specified speed that would allow the cloth to do it's job without breaking it
3. Pump the oil from the oil side in the intake tank into the storage tank
4. Expel the remaining water out into the ocean.
5. Repeat

We could make thousands of these!!

Then all those oil plumes would be history.

But unfortunately making these little guys might take longer than those oil plumes will be around...

Do you own one?

I do, and I haven't hooked it up to iTunes since I bought it. Everything I need on it is synced through mobileme. The iTunes store, app store and book store are all on the iPad and respond very nicely. I dunno about other people, but that's my usage pattern.

I mainly use the iPad for movie watching, browsing the web on the toilet, and book reading. Basically what I use my iPhone for, but with a bigger screen and more access to other apps.

I wouldn't say it's a killer app but it's definitely a nice luxury item

Where the iPad really shines is travel. It's much better than bringing a laptop if all you want to do is watch movies, read books, and use Pages to jot down story ideas (something I do).

It's actually pretty handy if you have an awesome dream that gives you a really good idea for a story. I actually used it for that. I picked it up right when I was still groggy from sleeping and the dream was fresh in my mind and started plugging away at the onscreen keyboard. Sure, I made some typos but the general gist of the idea was there.

I wouldn't say that it's really worth the price ( I got the lowest end wifi version and really don't miss 3g at all). But it is a nice product to own.

Life kinda sucks there for the underclass, so maybe that's why. I don't think this is limited to just Apple. It's just business as usual in Taiwan.

Kinda a preview for what the growing underclass will be experiencing in the USA in a decade or so..

Here's the article about Debt-related suicides btw: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2259336/

You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.

From our good old friend wikipedia:

Creativity is a mental process involving the discovery of new ideas or concepts, or new associations of the existing ideas or concepts, fueled by the process of either conscious or unconscious insight.

How can you say that after reading this comic: http://xkcd.com/368/

That's pretty fucking creative.

Also a lot of his "to-scale" maps are really fun to look at.
