Oh come on. Both articles you link to are full of nothing but conjecture and opinion, and both are about the same accident. Plus, anecdotal evidence tells us nothing. What I want to know is: how many accidents on average do Google autonomous cars have per mile, and how does that relate to the average for human-driven cars?

Is Innovation the Most Abused Word In Business? 287

dcblogs writes "Most of what is called innovation today is mere distraction, according to a paper by economist Robert Gordon, written for the National Bureau of Economic Research. Real innovations involve things like the combustion engine or air conditioning, not the smartphone. The paper includes thought experiments to help you gain more respect for genuine innovations such as indoor plumbing. The Financial Times has posted the complete 25-page paper.(pdf)"

Posting Photos of Olympics Could Land You In Court 394

hypnosec writes "With London's summer 2012 games due to take place in the very near future, you'd think that organizers would make more of an effort and persuade people to show more of an interest — yet it appears the complete opposite has happened, with strict guidelines banning athletes from posting photos of themselves on Twitter with products that aren't official Olympics sponsors, as well as prohibiting videos or photos to be taken from the athlete's village. Oh and just for good measure, fans could find themselves barred from sharing videos and photos on Facebook and YouTube of themselves delighting in said Olympics action."

Submission + - Studies Reveal Key to Bedbug Spread in U.S.

sciencehabit writes: Two new studies shed light on the amazing rise of bedbugs in the United States. The research suggests that the annoying critters were imported from overseas, not just once but on many occasions. It also shows that bedbugs are highly incestuous. As a result, a single mated female can set off an infestation in an apartment, or even an entire building.

Patches for Windows and Mac users of Adobe Reader X and Acrobat X will come on the next quarterly update, scheduled for Jan. 10, 2012."

Groupon Not Doing So Well On Wall Street 140

bdking writes "Shares of the daily-deals site were up Tuesday, but Groupon's ride on Wall Street since going public in early November has been almost all downhill. And there's no evident catalyst to reverse the slide." From the looks of it, Groupon is blowing all of its money attempting to expand in the face of ever-growing competition in a market with trivial start-up costs.

Parents are also a handicap if they feel that their child put in the effort to make the grade, and that they deserve appropriate marks for the effort.

I'm of the opinion that schools need to maximize the number of C students, not A students. If you push the bell curve of scores toward the middle, then you are challenging the majority of the students, and not neglecting the people who should be at the high end of the curve. People need to stop thinking of them as an statements of worth, and start thinking of them as an evaluation of challenge. Winning all the time does not lead to success. Even video game designers know that.

(I would probably be somewhere in middle of that curve, honestly)
