Simpler "Hello World" Demonstrated In C 582

An anonymous reader writes "Wondering where all that bloat comes from, causing even the classic 'Hello world' to weigh in at 11 KB? An MIT programmer decided to make a Linux C program so simple, she could explain every byte of the assembly. She found that gcc was including libc even when you don't ask for it. The blog shows how to compile a much simpler 'Hello world,' using no libraries at all. This takes me back to the days of programming bare-metal on DOS!"

To get up to a gigabit data rate, the pulses will be so fast you'd never see them. Even if it's multiplexed across many "frequencies" (colors), the pulsing will still be far faster than any eye could detect.

Plus, you're assuming it would be visible. Infrared would be somewhat easier and cheaper to generate.

Maybe I'm not being smart today, but doesn't that actually make it easier to block the bad guys, once their address space is identified?

They can plan all they want. They aren't likely to get one. I read the article. Nate Silver spent as much text on disclaimers about his analysis as he did discussing the analysis.

Most flash drive manufacturers state that their drives are not good for archival storage. They expect to lose data before 10 years have passed.

(1) Software can take hours.

(2) If these drives are intended for scrap, there's no need to worry about re-release. (When was the last time you re-used a 10 gig drive?)

Originally, yes. I believe they moved to VAX in later years, but kept the user IDs.

Sorry, but it's at the fringes where issues like this are decided. There's not a lot of effort directed at shutting down non-controversial speech, so it doesn't need a lot of direct effort to defend.
