It is like the syntax of modprobe is incorrect but nothing I can find says it isn't

I have even trawled through various bug systems for this.
It did work under the old Ubuntu 10.10 setup (and earlier).
Anyone got a clue that might help me find the right path (I had oath typed and that is also appropriate).
What the world needs is more truly random sources of numbers. Here are some more:

"An Australian historian has uncovered hidden documents which reveal that African American troops used machine guns to attack their white officers in a siege on a US base in north Queensland in 1942."
"But the story began to come to light when James Cook University's Ray Holyoak first began researching why US congressman Lyndon B Johnson visited Townsville for three days back in 1942.
What he discovered was evidence detailing one of the biggest uprisings within the US military.
"For 70 years there's been a rumour in Townsville that there was a mutiny among African-American servicemen. In the last year and a half I've found the primary documentation evidence that that did occur in 1942," Mr Holyoak told AM."
He has uncovered several documents hidden in the archives of the Queensland Police and Townsville Brigade detailing what happened that night.
According to the findings, the soldiers took to the machine guns and anti-aircraft weapons and fired into tents where their white counterparts were drinking.
More than 700 rounds were fired.
At least one person was killed and dozens severely injured, and Australian troops were called in to roadblock the rioters.
Mr Holyoak also discovered a report written by Robert Sherrod, a US journalist who was embedded with the troops.
It never made it to the press, but was handed to Lyndon B Johnson at a Townsville hotel and eventually filed away into the National Archives and Records Administration."

Ok who thought it was a good idea so that when you have a failing disk to keep popping up the warnings. The warnings I can live with but
they stop you mounting anything such as an external disk drive on which you might want to backup stuff to.
So rather than 30 Mb/s I have been getting 3Mb/s or less

I could have stopped the machine and rebooted with a live cd (puppy) but worried the disks may not come up. Am avoiding stressing the disks.
Some fuckhead machine operator appears to have lost or deleted all his ripped Blakes7 from DVD except what is on his iPod which can't be mounted on the desktop because of the disk errors, and is no use mounting on the laptop because libmp4v2 has been deleted from Ubuntu 11.10

My laptop
I am going to have to get better organised.
So I have been paying attention to the SMART warning from my hard disks and making sure my backups are up to date.
This morning heard click click and then machine died - guessing it was the disk with the o/s on. Tried rebooting grub came up (on another disk) but no o/s. Turned it off.
My plan is to wipe and reformat all the disks in the machine - will this work on disks (another one is quite sad as it has had quite a thrashing) already warning of failure? Say run dban then reformat the disks. Will this resurrect the usable portions (almost 1/2 of the big disk with the o/s has never even been formatted) or am I screwed? I do have other disks to put in the machine and in the meantime I have a laptop.
Machine will also receive some overdue maintenance - compressed air, remove all parts, more compressed air, new thermal paste for the processor/heatsink.
