Comment You can get temperature hotter than sun (Score 3, Interesting) 124

If you know the definition of the temperature then you would also know that billiard balls moving randomly on pool table have temperature way higher than the sun's surface if you consider each particle as independent. The definition of temperature is average random KE per particle and you can defined any object as particle.

Going to more down to earth, you can create temperature higher than sun in many system. It won't achieve the same energy density though (without melting immediately). Plasmas in experimental fusion reactors go to 100 million degrees.

Even if the claim of 30000 degree is false, I don't see how this lawsuit is valid. For it to be valid, you have to show harm done to you as well. If you say that because you read 30000 degree and presumed it to be better than the competitors and it is not then only you can win the lawsuit. So good luck.

Caltech is not a "public" university. It is a private university. It also provides financial aid to highest percentage of its students among the top universities. They spend huge amount of donated money from private donors on R&D and augments that with the IP licenses to continue to do more research and also fund the departments which don't generate IP revenue (Geology, match, astronomy and so on). Caltech researchers also get funding from govt and when that funding is used, it is governed by the applicable laws.

Comment Fallacy (Score 1) 286

The number of houses in CA is increasing. More houses are being built than destroyed. If the occupancy rate remains same, it should be able to provide houses to more people now than in the past. So if people are leaving then it indicates that either the occupancy rate is falling or the household size is falling. Indeed the household size has fallen from 2.93 to 2.81 (4%) from 2020-2022 while the population has fallen by 1%. So actually there is a net increase in housing supply.

So the focus should be on factors why is household size falling? If it is due to not having enough kids then it has nothing to do with housing. If it is due to not enough people getting married or moving in together, then that can also explain increase in housing demand and increase in price. If latter is the case, then my advice to those crying out housing price to find a partner and move in together and share the housing cost. This will make it affordable, reduce housing demand which will make prices fall even more.

Comment Too good to be true (Score 2) 158

Almost all thermal plants around the world have less than 50% efficiency. Even the fully sealed nuclear power plant rarely exceed 40%. So 60% thermal efficiency in car seems almost impossible. If such a thing can work, its first app would be powering trains, ships, power plants and so on. Not cars and airplanes. If they are talking about cars and planes, then I smell something fishy. Cars are rapidly moving to EV tech, which offers many others benefit apart from lower fuel consumption (silent, vibration free, fewer moving parts, reliability, higher life, no idle running, and so on).

It is so much hard to track people on iOS.

Seriously, why is this a news? FB has publicly said that it is losing billions of dollars due to tracking changes in iOS. He gave no reason why Android is better (can he say it publicly that they have trouble tracking people on iOS?).

Many other developers too may be feeling the same as Apple polices lot more than Android when it comes apps in the App Stores .The final arbiters of which is better should be the users and not developers, and specially not competitors.

Looks like that is where your numbers are actually coming from. The free cattle roaming you see barely feeds 5%. 95% or burgers come from factory farming. Actually, they have given good breakup. Much better than any other article that I have seen so far.

"The research shows that a big meat-eater's diet produces an average of 10.24 kg of planet-warming greenhouse gasses each day. A low meat-eater produces almost half that at 5.37 kg per day. [Fish diet: 4.74 kg. "Vegetarian" diet: 4.16 kg] And for vegan diets — it's halved again to 2.47 kg a day."

I am not sure which school did you go which taught you non-sense like "Less meat = more cheap carbohydrates". If you take your current diet and remove meat, then you might get this equation. Most vegetarians diet is not same as yours minus meat. You can substitute meat for fruits, vegetables, nuts, lentils, beans, and so on. Removing cars will cause lot more harm to people's lifestyle (unless you make huge amount of compensatory changes too). Removing meat will barely make any difference. So going meatless can be done today without any additional changes.

World needs to improve everywhere.
* Cutting down on meat.
* using EV,
* using high efficiency heat pump and better insulation.
* I don't know where does "homeownership" even come into picture (Are you suggesting renting the same house will reduce GHG. That would be stupid).
