Submission + - Will LCD screens remain top sellers on the market?

valiko75 writes: "LCDs have started gaining most popularity on the border of the years 2004 and 2005, when the sales of LCD screens increased dramatically. However, today plasma screens, which claim to possess better qualities, are stepping on the toes. It is our call, the users', what will be the best of the best: a lower price with a satisfactory quality or impressive quality for impressive money."

Submission + - Clouds Revealed on Titan

sporkme writes: "New images from Titan may reveal insight to the role of methane on Saturn's largest moon. From the article:

NASA's Cassini spacecraft captured the image of the 1,490-mile-diameter (2,400-kilometer-diameter) cloud on December 29, 2006. The cloud's presence fits predictions that Titan has a "methane cycle" similar to Earth's water cycle, with bodies of liquid methane evaporating and forming clouds that rain material back down on the surface.
Titan is the only moon that is known to have an atmosphere of significant composition, which in this case is almost entirely nitrogen. The cloud is about half the size of the United States, and the images are astounding."

Manhunt 2 Confirmed for Wii 65

Of all the licenses I expected to see on the Wii, the ultra-violent Manhunt title was not one of them. Coming to the 'next-gen alternative' trifecta of PSP, PS2, and Wii this summer is Manhunt 2 (not to be confused with the Sierra Manhunter adventure game series). The followup to the violent Rockstar title from 2003 will 'push game design and storytelling forward', sticking close to the original's dark suspense/stealth motifs.

Submission + - Keith Urban Sues Keith Urban Over Domain Name

An anonymous reader writes: Australian country singer Keith Urban has filed a lawsuit against a US painter of the same name, claiming that the lesser known Keith Urban's website KeithUrban.com infringes trademark and cyber-squatting laws.

The Australian singer's own website is located at KeithUrban.net. He wants the other website to be shut down and its domain name transferred to his ownership. He also seeks unspecified monetary damages.

Why Does Skype Read the BIOS? 327

pfp writes "Myria at pagetable.com, among others, noticed that Skype reads the machine's BIOS code on startup. This probably would've gone unnoticed if the operation didn't fail on 64-bit windows. From the post: 'It's dumping your system BIOS, which usually includes your motherboard's serial number, and pipes it to the Skype application. I have no idea what they're using it for, or whether they send anything to their servers, but I bet whatever they're doing is no good given their track record... If they hadn't been ignorant of Win64's lack of NTVDM, nobody would've noticed this happening.'"

Submission + - DRM versus market forces

proverbialcow writes: Lately, there's been a lot of talk about the evils of DRM; specifically, that Apple's DRM tie-in to the iPod grants them a lock on the iTunes library, forcing people to buy iPods who would otherwise buy something else. However, Steve Jobs last year effectively stared down the record companies when they demanded variable pricing structures, in large part because he was able to leverage the popularity of the iPod. My question is: would you be willing pay more for popular songs ($2.49 or more, compared to $0.99 for less popular works) in exchange for the absence of DRM? Why or why not?

Submission + - Carbon Nanotubes For Non-Volative Computer Memory

An anonymous reader writes: Researchers at the University of California have developed telescoping carbon nanotube memory which is non-volatile and may offer the possibility of atomic-scale computer data storage that would replace both RAM, FLASH RAM, and hard drive storage in the next few cycles. Submission + - Judge: RIAA Must Pay Defendant's Legal Fees

evanwired writes: "Debbie Foster, an RIAA file sharing defendant whose case was dismissed last summer, has just won a request for legal fees. Eliot Van Buskirk at Wired's Listening Post blog obtained a copy (PDF) of Judge Lee R. West's Order, issued today, in which the judge grants Foster an award of "reasonable attorney fees in this action under 505 of the Copyright Act," but denies her "attorneys' fees under 28 U.S.C. 1927." Foster's attorney says her client is pleased with the result and will likely recoup $50,000 or more. If she's right, that's an outcome that could have significant consequences for the RIAA's litigation strategy."

Submission + - Using the Wiimote to DJ

Tony writes: "Here's a site about a DJ (DJ !, or "DJ Shift-1") using two Wii-motes to control his DJ setup on his PC. He says: "As much of a gimmick this looks like, it really works like a charm." And "Don't think of this as much DJing with video game controllers, but the birth of DJing with WIRELESS DJ controls." He's got a couple videos on his site demonstrating his setup. Yet another original use of the wireless Wii controllers."

RIAA Says CDs Should Cost More 540

EatingSteak writes "The folks over at Techdirt just put up a great story today, with the RIAA claiming the cost of a CD has gone down significantly relative to the consumer price index. The RIAA 'Key Facts' page claims that based on the 1983 price of CDs, the 1996 price should have been $33.86. So naturally, you should feel like you're getting a bargain. Sounds an awful lot like the cable companies saying cable prices are really going down even though they're going up."

Submission + - Walmart Video Store Not Friendly to FireFox

Guy Paddock writes: "Walmart's new "Video Downloads Beta" service leaves much to be desired for FireFox users. The first load of the site leaves a twisted mess of images and text that's completely devoid of meaning. A regular refresh will yield the same thing, but if the user does a "force refresh" (Shift + Reload, on the Mac version of FireFox anyway), the page comes in crystal clear. Still, clicking some links yields a loading screen that never goes away.

Needless to say, the discount giants penny-pinching web designers will need to do much better if they want to win over the current internet audience."
