The only problem is that it does not reduce the number of "bad guys". If you bomb someone, their friends and family are going to be angry and take up arms against you. If you kill them too, THEIR friends and family will take up arms against you. You're literally creating enemies because they want revenge\justice. The better option is to stop killing them and withdraw our troops. They can't kill us if we aren't there. They'll still be angry and some may still take up arms against the US, but they'd have to come here to do that. This is what a military is meant to protect us from.

Imagine it this way: If a foreign country started using drones or occupying troops to kill people in the US that it considered to be dangerous, don't you think that we'd be angry? I would hope that Americans would be angry and fight back. How many of you would say "Oh well. They're killing our people, but it's none of my business."?

Ron Paul hates Social Security but doesn't mind collecting it. Is that a flip-flop or just outright hypocrisy?

He paid into Social Security, so he deserves to collect it. He wants there to be a way for people to opt out of it. Some people may wish to put the money toward something else instead of giving it to the government.

http://www.ontheissues.org/2012/Ron_Paul_Social_Security.htm explains his view on this in more detail.

So no, I don't think it's hypocritical or flip-flopping. If you were forced to pay money into the program, why shouldn't you collect from it later on?

That's just it, though. He didn't suggest a return to the gold standard of before since it obviously had flaws. He has spoken in favor of making gold and silver legal tender as well as allowing competing currencies, including gold-backed notes and digital-gold currency.

Most people don't actually look beyond the surface-talk of the mainstream media. "Gold standard? That sounds nuts!" Do some actually research and you'll find that his views have been heavily distorted by the media.

May you live long enough to be ridiculed for your age.

A quote from Ronald Reagan: "I want you to know that also I will not make age an issue of this campaign. I am not going to exploit, for political purposes, my opponent's youth and inexperience."

Just because someone is elderly does not mean that they are senile or ready to kick the bucket. Listen to Ron Paul speak about monetary policy sometime and just try to keep up with him. He's also physically very fit, going on long bike rides in the heat of Texas. Whether you otherwise think about a candidate and their positions, ignoring or laughing at them because of their age is just silly.

Submission + - Quantum chip breakthrough to unleash 'ultra-fast' computing (theglobeandmail.com)

kulnor writes: While announcements around quantum computers pop every couple of weeks claiming to be one step closer, this one seem to be quite significant:
"Scientists have built a new quantum chip that will enable the creation of completely secure mobile phones and ultra-fast computers with capabilities far beyond today’s devices. The international research team behind the breakthrough, who are based at the University of Bristol, will detail the development at the British Science Festival in Aberdeen this week."

Submission + - Community seeks to stop closure of City of Heroes (addictinginfo.org) 1

Multiple, coordinated actions are now under way, ranging from petitions to NCSoft against closure of the game, letter writing campaigns, attempts to find a potential buyer and new publisher for the game, as well as attempts possibly acquire the game via a crowd-sourced action."

Submission + - NASA funded "Flying Star" Bi-Directional Plane (spaceindustrynews.com) 1

Taco Cowboy writes: A unique plane which looks like "Ninja-Star" received an initial funding of $100,000, from NASA's Innovative Advanced Concepts program.

The plane has a four-pointed flying wing that rotates mid-flight to transition between super and subsonic flight, thus increasing efficiency and eliminating sonic booms.

Wings that work best for low speeds have a rounded front edge to generate lift, and are larger to provide more control surface. But there's little need for either at supersonic speeds, which work best with a sharper, flatter wings. The subsonic features hurt fuel efficiency and generate the sonic booms so unbeloved by residents of military training areas.

The plane will travel over 3,000 miles an hour, and could carry as many as 70 passengers.

The developer of the plane could get another $500,000 if the aircraft's early development is up to spec.

Submission + - Australian Attorney General pushes ahead with Gov't Web Snooping (smh.com.au)

CuteSteveJobs writes: Australian Attorney-General, Nicola Roxon has now fully backs a controversial plan to capture the online data of all Australians, despite only six weeks ago saying ''the case had yet to be made." The Tax Office, the Federal Police and the Opposition all support it, with Federal Liberal Party MP Ross Vasta declaring "the highest degree of scrutiny and diligence is called for." With all major parties on board, web monitoring of all Australians appears to be inevitable.

Submission + - IBM working on Watson app for smartphones (extremetech.com)

MrSeb writes: "After conquering Jeopardy, battling patent trolls, and chasing down health insurance fraudsters, IBM now plans to bring Watson to smartphones. In essence, IBM is hoping to build a better, faster, and more professional/enterprisey version of Apple’s Siri, the voice-controlled assistant that debuted on the iPhone 4S. Each IBM Watson installation is a 10-rack supercomputer with a total of 2880 processor threads (90 Power7 CPUs clocked at 3.5GHz, each with eight cores, and each core with four threads). There is 16TB of RAM, and the entire thing is embarrassingly parallel — it can process 500 gigabytes of data per second. Now, don’t worry — IBM isn’t trying to shrink the room-sized Watson down to the size of a smartphone. Instead, we’re simply looking at a smartphone app that directly interfaces with an internet-connected Watson installation. In theory, Watson’s question answering ability would utterly blow Siri and Google Now out of the water. While Siri can set your alarms, Watson can parse a patient’s charts and provide clinical diagnoses and pharmaceutical prescriptions. Where Siri can tell you whether you’ll need an umbrella, you could ask Watson whether now is the right time to plant your crops — or for a complete walkthrough on how to fix your toaster."

Submission + - WikiLeaks Bypasses Financial Blockade With Bitcoin (forbes.com)

cold fjord writes: A surprising real world example of bitcoin in action: On its public bitcoin address, Wikileaks has taken in over $32,000 equivalent in more than 1,100 separate bitcoin donations throughout the blockade (1BTC = $10.00). But these amounts may be significantly higher, because it does not even include the individually-generated bitcoin addresses that WikiLeaks provides for donors upon request. Also announced last month, WikiLeaks appears to have found another way around the VISA and Mastercard blockade by using the French national credit card system, Carte Bleue, to process these payments (at least temporarily).
