I had a 486 laptop with 16mb of ram and a black and white LCD, I had good results with using pieces of slackware 10.1. If you want to save a lot of space, use strace and ldd to figure out exactly what files you need.

Compile a custom kernel with everything you actually have built in except for cardbus/pcmcia modules.

I'm in Richmond.Vancouver.bc.ca ;)
I bought a USB DTV receiver on boxing day from futureshop, and had trouble with Global and KVOS, I cant get CTV at all. Hopefully this is due to the signals being low power right now. Otherwise in 2011 I'll be stuck with CBC and maybe "A Channel" in victoria if im lucky.

It's only dangerous to update parts of the bios that cannot be avoided like the first block that gets booted. Just need enough programming to be able to read a new BIOS off of somewhere else, kinda like the BIOS' BIOS. Sadly the bios updater from ASUS rewrites the bootblock :-/

Submission + - CA power grid will be tested this week 1

whawk640 writes: The not-so-savvy media has not picked up on this yet, but you, the slashdot community are much more aware.

California's power grid is going to get a serious test this week with temperatures over much of the state WELL over the 110 degree mark by Thursday.
Not only are temperatures high, but California has continued to grow. With more and more homes and businesses, the peak electricity demand in the state is expected to be 42.5 Gigawatts by Tuesday afternoon. (That's about 21 hoover dams at peak capacity.)
Check out the current situation here:

With temperatures expected to hit around 108 in the inland valleys this week, can the power grid hack it?

At what point do we, the people say, "That's enough growth already!"?
