Submission + - Jericho Cancellation Reconsidered

Barkmullz writes: Fans trumpeting the cause of CBS' canceled drama "Jericho" have caught the network's ear (covered previously by Slashdot).CBS, deluged with calls, messages and shipments of nuts signifying viewer displeasure, is reconsidering its decision. A decision on whether to bring the show back, probably for a midseason run, is imminent.
Security

Submission + - Facebook wants to collect users' email passwords

ScottSCY writes: It seems that Facebook has added a new feature that allows users to find friends in their email address books who have accounts on Facebook. The only thing you have to do is provide them your email address (they take gmail, yahoo, msn, aol, and more) and your email account password. They will then retrieve your address book. Clearly this is a huge security issue, but don't worry, Facebook says "Facebook won't email anyone without your permission, and we won't store your email or password." Well that's a relief.
Patents

Submission + - Would you fight your own software patent?

ingo23 writes: Everybody knows that the Slashdot crowd just loves the software patents. If not the patents, what would you rant about? Now imagine this — at work you are developing a piece of some cool software. And one day your employer decides to file a patent for it naming you as an inventor. Would you gladly accept the honor or would you get on a soap box and stir up a little revolt against software patents?

Journal Journal: Second Test Launch of SpaceX Falcon 1

The second test launch of the SpaceX Falcon 1 rocket took place today at 6:10 pm PST. After successfully having completed launch, first stage separation (2m 51s), second stage ignition (2m 55s), fairing separation (3m 16s), and reaching an altitude of 300 km, the vehicle was seen entering what is referred to as roll oscillations (4m 30s). Shortly thereafter, telemetry was lost. The second stage is assum

NFL Caught Abusing the DMCA 357

Implied Oral Consent writes "You know how the NFL puts up those notices before every game saying 'This telecast is copyrighted by the NFL for the private use of our audience, and any other use of this telecast or of any pictures, descriptions or accounts of the game without the NFL's consent is prohibited?' Well, Ars Technica is reporting that Wendy Seltzer thought that that was over-reaching and posted a video of the notice on YouTube. Predictably, the NFL filed a DMCA Take Down notice on the clip. But Ms. Seltzer knows her rights, so she filed a DMCA Counter Notice. This is when the NFL violated the DMCA, by filing another Take Down notice instead of taking the issue to court — their only legitimate option, according to the DMCA. Unfortunately for the NFL, Ms. Seltzer is a law professor, an EFF lawyer, and the founder of Chilling Effects. Oops!"
Puzzle Games (Games)

Submission + - Be rich for an Eternity (II)

sl0wp0is0n writes: Those who missed the chance to make a neat $1 million last time by solving Eternity, dubbed "World's toughest jig-saw puzzle", should mark their calendars. Eternity II, an even tougher version of the puzzle, hits the shelves July 28, 2007. Last time, a couple of British mathematicians won $1 million by using their computers at home to crack the puzzle. They used a combination of probability theory and clever computer programming for the teask. This time, the author, Viscount Christopher Monckton, has doubled the prize to $2 million, while enlisting maths experts to ensure that the puzzle cannot be solved using a computer.

Interestingly, in order to boost the sales of the previous puzzle, the Viscount also took help of a PR campaign, claiming he had to sell off his 67-room mansion to pay off the prize money. Wonder what he will do this time!
