Comment New model mentality (Score 4, Insightful) 333

The only reason software companies have the new model mentality is to make money off what they push as a new model. Software companies would be better if they shifted away from that and to doing just version updates. 90% of the development costs are paid for on an existing OS, the rest is doing bug fixes and enhancements. I personally see no reason to go to Win8, I don't care for the interface. I tolerate Win7 because I can make it mostly like XP but wish I didn't have to add software to fix the start menu. I think the drive away from the standard desktop is partly killing the desktop PC. The standard XP style desktop works. Changing it makes no sense on a desktop PC. It requires people relearn things, increases IT support costs and slows down productivity. At work my productivity has slowed down going from XP to Win7 because on Win7 I have to deal with more of the little popup context menus that get in my way no matter how much I tweak it and the copy/paste issues of Win7 drives me crazy. I don't like to side with the Chinese government on anything but on this I agree... On windows, upgrading to Win8 doesn't make much sense.

Comment Zombie nutrition (Score 1) 163

One thing I never see is that Zombies would eventually have to run out of energy if they don't get any food. The rate of zombie demise from starvation would need to figure into it. Eventually they will die from lack of food, water and electrolytes, the latter would immobilize their muscles. Zombies aren't known for having a balanced diet. Eating just meat wouldn't provide them the energy needed to keep going. Lying inert still uses energy.

Comment OS Prototyping engine (Score 1) 177

I think a setup like this would be good to develop a OS prototyping engine. Instead of working low to high level like most operating systems you could work at all levels to perfect the upper level look & feel and adjust the lower level to correct for problems affecting higher level & security. Sort of like what going from type writers to word processors did for writing.

Comment We need an amendment to the US Constitution (Score 1) 658

What we need is an amendments to the US Constitution blocking blanket tracking of "US citizens" unless the court has approved it on suspicion of a felony criminal act by an individual, covering general privacy and something blocking requirements for an individual to purchase health insurance. Also something to reduce the burden of the individual to have to keep records. This isn't the space age or information age, it's the bureaucratic age.

Comment H-1B visas skirt export restrictions (Score 1) 195

H-1B visas need to be restricted even more. Companies are seriously abusing them. They are hiring people out of the US, importing them on those visas, training them here then sending them back overseas to do the work. Companies are using this to skirt the ITAR restrictions. If engineers did the work in the US some of that work would be ITAR restricted but if it's done overseas then it's not as restricted. Companies are employing farms of engineers overseas now.

Their claim of not enough qualified people in the US is bogus. Companies are just using this as an excuse to suck more money and jobs out of the US.If they can't find qualified people in the US then they should search for people who have potential then sponsor their education thru student loans that are repaid by the company if the person works for them. This would give the employee an incentive to stay with the company at least until the student loan is paid off. The reason why companies don't do this is they don't like to think that far down the road as to what their needs will be. They like instant gratification.
