VoIP and Home Security Systems Don't Get Along 187

coondoggie writes "Here is a story about consumer VoIP services that can cause your home security alarm system to malfunction or not work at all. There have been problems with customer phone systems in Canada who were using Primus but Vonage customers in the U.S have complained too. A number of sites have popped up offering suggestions to help deal with the problem."

US Group Wants Canada Blacklisted Over Piracy 585

An anonymous reader writes "Following up on an earlier story, the IIAA wants to add Canada to a blacklist of the worst intellectual property offenders. A powerful coalition of U.S. software, movie and music producers is urging the Bush administration to put Canada on an infamous blacklist of intellectual property villains, alongside China, Russia and Belize. 'Canada's chronic failure to modernize its copyright regime has made it a global hub for bootleg movies, pirated software and tiny microchips that allow video-game users to bypass copyright protections', the International Intellectual Property Alliance complains in a submission to the U.S. government."

NASA World Wind 1.4 Released With Trailer 117

Bull_UK writes "As many of you probably already know NASA had to shift it's priorities to the upcoming Java version of World Wind, leaving 1.4 effectively orphaned, but the Open Source community came together and with a lot of hard work we were able to finish what Chris Maxwell started. Some of the new things which differentiate the new World Wind from the competition are the amazing new visual effects, including HDR, check out the video for some examples. Remember this virtual globe has never had the same goals as Google Earth, if you just want to see your house stick with GE, although many areas have high resolution as good and sometimes better than GE. World Wind is aimed at education and science, all the default imagery is copyright free, you don't need to purchase a license to redistribute the imagery and there are no pro or expert versions to buy, you can happily use World Wind at work or school without fear of any lawyers confiscating your research."

Submission + - Charter implements SiteFinder-like DNS

paulbiz writes: It appears Charter Cable's DNS servers have just started resolving all invalid hostnames and pointing them to their own error page. The about page states "This service automatically eliminates many of the error pages you may encounter as you surf the web. No software was installed on your computer for this service to work." It has an "opt-out" page, but when you "opt-out" it simply sets a cookie that makes their page redirect errors to Microsoft Live Search instead!

Submission + - From Rayman to Rainbow Six: The Rise of Ubisoft

njkid1 writes: "Ubisoft may not rival the scale of an Electronic Arts or Activision, but the French company has amassed a number of top brands in recent years and is arguably one of the premier publishers in today's video game market. In this exclusive, Ubisoft North America President Laurent Detoc explains the company's journey and where it's headed. http://biz.gamedaily.com/industry/feature/?id=1525 5&ncid=AOLGAM000500000000014"

Submission + - Piracy on the rise? Blame Canada!

An anonymous reader writes: From the Globe and Mail by way of Gamespot, an article about the International Intellectual Property Alliance, which is shaming Canada for failing to tighten up its copyright laws. They're demanding the US Government blacklists Canada, claiming it is a mass exporter of bootlegged IP. The IIPA is made up of entertainment industry bodies including Slashdot favourites the MPAA and RIAA. I always knew Canada was to blame for something...

Submission + - Jean Ichbiah, Chief Architect of Ada, Dies

An anonymous reader writes: Jean Ichbiah, the chief architect of the Ada programming language, has died (http://www.adaic.org/news/ichbiah.html). Although Ada is not widely used today outside of DoD, the language introduced a generation of programmers to practical language constructs for what had until then been esoteric features such as overloading, exception handling, and multi-tasking.

New Accelerator Technique Doubles Particle Energy 124

ZonkerWilliam writes "Plasma wake particle accelerators are making surprisingly quick advances. It was a just a little while ago we had GeV acceleration in 3cm. Now they are capable of doubling the energy of electrons. 'Imagine a car that accelerates from zero to sixty in 250 feet, and then rockets to 120 miles per hour in just one more inch. That's essentially what a collaboration of accelerator physicists has accomplished, using electrons for their race cars and plasma for the afterburners. Because electrons already travel at near light's speed in an accelerator, the physicists actually doubled the energy of the electrons, not their speed.'"

Database Bigwigs Lead Stealthy Open Source Startup 187

BobB writes "Michael Stonebraker, who cooked up the Ingres and Postgres database management systems, is back with a stealthy startup called Vertica. And not just him, he has recruited former Oracle bigwigs Ray Lane and Jerry Held to give the company a boost before its software leaves beta testing. The promise — a Linux-based system that handles queries 100 times faster than traditional relational database management systems."

YouTube Hands Over User Info To Fox 396

An anonymous reader writes "Tech Crunch has an article about YouTube identifying and handing over a user's information after a request from Fox. 'Three weeks after receiving a subpoena from the U.S. District Court in Northern California, YouTube has reportedly identified a user accused by 20th Century Fox Television of uploading episodes of the show 24 a week prior to their running on television. That user, named ECOTtotal, is also alleged to have uploaded 12 episodes of The Simpsons, some quite old. Apparently Google and YouTube were willing and able to identify the owner of the username ECOTtotal, according to a report on InternetNews.com.'"

Submission + - AMD's 'Frantic Price Cuts' May Pressure Intel

kog777 writes: Price competition is sparking up again between the world's largest chip makers, Intel Corp. (Nasdaq: INTC) and Advanced Micro Devices (NYSE: AMD). As Intel took a technological lead late last year, AMD responded with "frantic price cuts" after a weak start to its first quarter, Needham analyst Y. Edwin Mok said in a note to clients on Tuesday.

Windows Vista: the Missing Manual

John Suda writes " It's been over five years in the making and its nearly perfect. No, Im not referring to Microsofts vast new operating system named Windows Vista, but to the reference book Windows Vista: the Missing Manual, by author David Pogue. The book is the latest, and perhaps best, in the Missing Manual series published by Pogue Press/ OReilly Media, Inc. The Missing Manual series is the benchmark of quality for computer manuals. Unless youre a system administrator, programmer, or uber-geek, this is probably the only reference source you'll need to learn Microsofts Vista." Read below for the rest of John's review.

Submission + - Open Source Online Order Entry - Suggestions?

kwandar writes: "Our company is a small/medium sized software developer that sells software around the world. The order/sales system is outdated (DOS based), with limited capabilities. We need to replace this with one that provides strong CRM/sales, customer support, bug reporting/tracking, order entry/accounting reporting, and perhaps hooks into licensing software. Ideally it would be web based so that all ordering can be done over one system, whether by a customer, ourselves internally, or our foreign distributors. I'd like input from Slashdot users, as many of you have already been through this and hunted down software that worked in a software sales environment. Is there an all-in-one solution, or several solutions that can be recommended (open source preferred)?"
