Scientists To Breed the Auroch From Extinction 277

ImNotARealPerson writes "Scientists in Italy are hoping to breed back from extinction the mighty auroch, a bovine species which has been extinct since 1627. The auroch weighed 2,200 pounds (1000kg) and its shoulders stood at 6'6". The beasts once roamed most of Asia and northern Africa. The animal was depicted in cave paintings and Julius Caesar described it as being a little less in size than an elephant. A member of the Consortium for Experimental Biotechnology suggests that 99% of the auroch's DNA can be recreated from genetic material found in surviving bone material. Wikipedia mentions that researchers in Poland are working on the same problem."

Surgeon Makes Tutorial DVD For Conscious Open-Heart Surgery 170

Lanxon writes "Swaroup Anand, 23, from Bangalore, was fully conscious as he underwent open-heart surgery. An epidural to the neck, administered at the city’s Wockhardt Hospital, numbed his body during the procedure. Dr Vivek Jawali pioneered the technique ten years ago and has recently released a tutorial on DVD, which gives a step-by-step guide to the procedure for other surgeons to watch and learn from."

I love the morons on the motorcycles lane splitting and then getting creamed.

Many places allow lane-splitting (in California the law was you can split lanes, but no more than 10mph faster than the other vehicle in the lane and you may not exceed the speed limit while doing so) because many bikes are air-cooled. No movement, bike overheats, bike dies.

For me, I loved the morons in cages who would pinch off bikes for no apparent reason.

How is a person in a country that is relatively free, but headed in the wrong direction, supposed to agitate for change in that worldview?

I dunno, but perhaps try less agitating and more dialogue?

Honestly, take a step back and look around and you'll see that everywhere we are inundated with declarations that "we" are bad and demands that "we" change our ways. Few seem willing to establish mutual respect, they always demand that "the other guy" provide that courtesy. And most attempts to point this out end with no more progress than the topical equivalent of "he started it!!!!"

That is not a good starting place for compromise. ... all this IMHO, of course.

This isn't overstating, really. I've been going through the process of getting cleared (for the moment your base level Secret clearance). Some things I've learned:

1 - 10) It takes a Loooooooong time. I'm 10 months in thus far. Took 5 months to be 'pre-cleared' alone. ... and I was RECRUITED to apply / to the contract.

Other random questions / comments I found interesting:
1) Have any significant debt? Showstopper.
2) Have any debt at all delinquent? Showstopper.
3) Argued with a superior in a past job for any reason? Big concern.
4) Can't remember / haven't kept track of people you knew 7 years ago? Concern.
5) Traveled outside the country for any reason in the past 7 years? Concern. (where did you go, when, how long, etc)
6) Been unemployed at any time in the last 7 years? Concern.

It's a stupidly ridiculously bureaucratic process. And yes, I understand the reasoning. That doesn't mean I agree with it.

(who wants to bet this post will cause things to slow down again?)

So who do you have to bribe to make a minimum Capitol investment and how much?

You don't have to 'bribe' anyone. You generally have to develop a plan (and perhaps a prototype, depending upon your desired equity position) that demonstrates to investors that you have a way of increasing their money. See? No bribes needed! Just good old fashioned work!
