Journal Journal: Don't forget your card in the ATM machine! 2

An acquaintance of mine relayed the following experience at an ATM:

He went to the ATM machine, performed a transaction, then walked away from the machine, forgetting his card. The next guy in line pulled the card out, put it back in and pulled out $100 and was never asked to enter the PIN number for the card. The third person found the card and turned it into the bank. My acquaintance complained to the bank, who said, in effect, "yeah, we know about this 'feature' but it's too petty to worry about" and reimbursed the stolen $100.

To clarify, it appears once a card has been used, the PIN successfully entered, and the transaction completed, that the ATM remembers the PIN/authorization and allows the cardholder to subsequently insert the card and complete additional transactions without reauthorization (i.e. entering the PIN) provided (I assume) second card hasn't been used and somehow cleared knowledge of the first card.

I cannot vouch for the reliability of this tale, and I didn't turn up anything specific about this 'feature' in the 15 seconds I spent searching the net.

Does anyone else have experience, knowledge, or information about this that corroborates this tale? I'll keep looking and post anything I find.

Journal Journal: Digital watches redux 2

Apprently, my fellow slashdotters have a lot to say about their analog vs. digital preferences when it comes to watches. While I can understand why analog watches won't die (I, too, view watches as jewelry, and analog is prettier), the fact remains that if one wants a digital watch, it's seemingly impossible to find a good one. I wonder, what exactly are /. digital watch wearers wearing?

Journal Journal: The Quest for a Digital Watch

Why are all watches analog now? For the last several years my husband has been looking for a good digital watch (he's had a couple Citizens over time), and aside from the occasional Timex, we cannot find a single watch that has a digital-only readout. Even those watches which have a digital readout are analog too, and the hands usually get in the way of the digital at times.

Journal Journal: Be Warned: eTechWarehouse

DO NOT ORDER FROM ETECHWAREHOUSE

I'm not sure what's going on with eTechWarehouse, but it's not good. Customers are ranking them the bottom of the barrel on review sites, such as BizRate. eTechWarehouse has been taking orders for items they appear to have in stock, charging credit cards before the orders are processed, and not shipping the orders, claiming they've had an heavy influx of orders and can't keep up with the demand. When customers cancel their orders, they're told it will take about a week for the refund to be processed. Many customers have been waiting weeks for their refunds. From an e-mail sent by the company earlier this week:

We apologize to all of our customers for the delays in credit processing that you may be experiencing. Many factors have contributed to these delays and we are taking all possible steps to resolve these issues as soon as possible. In fact we are in the final development stages of a plan that will allow us to issue requested, and required credits in an expedited manner.

We would also like to advise our customers that all of our website domain www.etw.com is no longer active but the website domain www.eTechWarehouse.com is still active and accessible. Along with this our email addresses ending with the domain name etw.com are no longer active but you may submit all email requests to the eTechWarehouse.com domain.

We are confident of being able to resolve outstanding credit requests issues very quickly and appreciate your patience and cooperation in this matter. If you are awaiting a response to a recent email or voice mail please be patient as we will respond as quickly as possible.

Once again, thanks for your patience and your understanding.

Sincerely,

eTechWarehouse service@eTechWarehouse.com
