Post-monarchical Russia has always claimed democracy and rule by the People... That's the point of having People's Congress and the "Soviet" in the "Soviet Union". And the "Democratic" post-USSR Russia has always claimed to have a rule of Democracy. They just have a very sneaky ways of going around it to instill aristocracy (such as having a 3 term "president", police intimidation of the opposition, disqualification of the opposition from the elections, imprisoning the most outspoken critics, etc.)

By exposing national secrets that served as a basis of protection, Snowden performed "adherence to the Enemies". He absolutely should be tried for treason for this. He lied on his credentials for clearance and job specifically (as he admitted) to get into the NSA and expose the spying secrets.

I don't recall them ever mentioning either Guy Fawkes or the Gunpowder Plot anywhere in the Federalist Papers or anywhere else.
