Submission + - The polics of the root (politico.com)

dstates writes: "The good news is that the Internet has become a central enough part of global life that politicians are starting to pay attention to the details of Internet management. The bad news is that the politicians are paying attention to the Internet. Politico.com has an interesting note on the politics surrounding the annual meeting of the The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) which is opening its annual meeting in San Francisco today. While some people finding it frightening that a US corporation controls names usage on the Internet, the prospect of a UN body assuming control raises its own concerns."

Submission + - Exclusive : ARM Cortex-A15 "40%" Faster Than A9 (itproportal.com)

siliconbits writes: We've received an email from ARM that confirms that the Cortex-A15 will be at least 40 per cent faster than the A9 when it comes to raw performance (Dhrystone MIPS), all things equal; same number of core, same speed. According to our contact at ARM, the A15 has a "published but not formal number" of 3.5 DMIPS/MHz but told us that the performance difference across generation is "dependent on many factors" before adding that "Other benchmarks can show less improvement on specific devices, others a greater improvement". ARM has yet to officially publish the Cortex-A15 figures on its website. The Cortex-A8 reached 2.0 DMIPS/MHz while the Cortex-A9 reached 2.5 DMIPS/MHz, a 25 per cent improvement. Given that startups like Caldexa are already developing quad-core iteration of the Cortex-A9, one can easily envision that a 4-core Cortex-A15 will shatter the 40K DMIPS barrier, putting it within touching distance of the AMD Phenom II X4 940 Black Edition which reached almost 43K DMIPS running at 3GHz.

Submission + - Turn your iPod Touch into a Phone (cnbeta.com)

Humunculus writes: Turn your iPod Touch into a phone! Interesting application and hardware about to be released in China that "wraps" around your iPod touch to provide phone functionality for about $60. Now of course I am not saying it will change it to an iPhone, as it's not Apple based, but interesting nonetheless. I am just wondering how the actual app to drive it will get past Apple via iTunes or perhaps the iPod needs to be jailbroken first? There is a lot of informaiton on this link about the product, but unfortunately most is in Chinese. Wow there's life left for my iPod Touch, way cheaper than an iPhone and not locked to any carrier!

Submission + - Fox News encodes propaganda in their URLs (foxnews.com)

bucketoftruth writes: Descriptive URLs are all the rage these days, allowing would-be clickers to identify the content of an article before visiting the site. They can also be used to deceive or send a message. Fox News' website offered their version of a descriptive URL with a few easter eggs. 1. The URL includes "obama-gets-crack-healer-chief" when crack, healer, and chief don't appear anywhere in the article or headline. 2. The accompanying picture in the article is named "0bama_111009_forthood_monster_397x224.jpg". 0bama is spelled with a zero — a popular meme of groups that consider his presidency invalid. There's also no reference to a monster at Fort Hood, apart from the implied character of the shooter. Buy why include it in a picture of the president and first lady? Is Fox exercising creative license with URLs or is it more nefarious?
