Comment Re: The Fed is being idiotic, as usual (Score 1) 259

Wow thank god we donâ(TM)t have you running the Fed. You could not be more completely wrong. We have had high inflation many times. Most recently in the 70s.

Paul Volcker used blunt force to finally break the high inflation, raising the average Fed Funds rate up to over 16% by 1981), creating recessions and market losses - while finally breaking the inflationary cycle. It worked. We know that this strategy works. That experience is a key part of what is now called the Taylor Rule, which calls for 12.7% Fed Funds rates to cure persistent 7.8% rates of inflation.

The Fed needs to raise rates to double digits immediately to have any hope of beating inflation. Everyone panicked over a 1% increase, so we are absolutely fucked, no way the Fed is allowed to raise them to 10-15%, can you imagine. Cats and dogs living together, mass hysteria would ensueâ¦

So expect a lot more inflation for a lot longer, years, stock markets will plummet 70-95% total. We are about 1/3 there already and it hasnâ(TM)t even been a year.

Which is why no software engineer should work unpaid overtime. I go back to the tenet: software features and complexity will try to naturally fill any free time. You will not have to force adding features or making it better, there will always be natural pressure to do so, either from management, users, or simply the nature of your own desire to make it better. On the flip side you sure as hell will have to fight, barter, and claw features and complexity out of the software. Design does not dictate schedules like everyone hopes and thinks it does. Design evolves and changes given the amount of free time, until the engineer is fully booked, then the inevitable realization of exponential issues and problems happen, yielding large deficits in time.

The arrogant auto makers have two choices. Sell no cars and wait an unknown amount of time for backlogs to clear, or start upgrading with a defined cost and schedule to plan from.

Which would you choose?

I believe all of this media coverage is designed to gain political support to force the chipmakers to lose money and bail out the automakers.

Remove your biases, anyone who thinks usbc beats lightning in any way as a rugged, easy to use, solid connector is out of their mind. There are so many fidley breakable bits in a usbc connector. In lightning it is a slab of metal with some contacts, elegant, simple, cheap, rugged. I donâ(TM)t love everything Apple makes but the lightning connector is a damn fine connector, perhaps at top of a list of best connectors ever designed.

If the 6 billion was spent on solar at todays prices it would generate 7700 MW. Or given the 25% federal subsidy 9700 MW. Or given the 9 billion estimate and subsidy 14600 MW. Granted that money was spent long ago when solar was much more expensive.

What a load of crap. Anything you personally do is practically meaningless. If Gore had given up everything sure some would be inspired and do the same, but far more would not have heard his message and done nothing. I can give up styrofoam, my car, my AC, all of which will do absolutely nothing. But if we change one business like Chik fil a to stop using styrofoam that will save billions of cups and containers and will make a difference. The only way out of this mess is policy, laws, fines, taxes, forced action. The time for wishful thinking is over. Unfortunately all of the corrupt politicians and lawyers own all of the rotten companies profiting from all of the bad policies.

I do not mind slack for work, I let it live on my phone bc I have it sent to silent. I do not want my personal comms on slack bc I do not want to enable notifications, bc then that will interfere with my personal time. Personal comms are more important and deserve notifications most of the time. When logged on my desktop I also do not want personal comms interrupting me during work. Even if they are silenced they are still right there and a mental annoyance. Having my most of my personal comms on my phone and most of work comms on my desktop is ideal, it provides a physical separation and makes it easier to focus on work when working, and ignore work when not working. Mixing the two doesnâ(TM)t make sense.
