Journal Journal: Trollback for May 2003 4

This is trollback for the month of May.

The interview with Fyodor

It was nice to see that such a noble white-hat as Fyodor, who is so decent and upstanding as to explain the Jedi-esque philosophies of hackers, stooping so low as to offer his humble insights for the Slashdot audience. In traditional Slashdot style, the top rated comments were be passed on as questions, although strangely Egg Troll's question, still at +5 Troll, was missed out of the resulting interview. Trollback can only assume that it fell through the cracks somewhere. Certainly a strange set of events befell this question. After several days at at +5, it was gradually moderated down to 1, even with the support of the K5 community. Trollback's sources suggest that after an email was sent to CmdrTaco enquiring about this, the post quickly returned to +5.

Most of you know the story of Fyodor vs SDEM, but the average slashbot - to whom Fyodor is something of a hero - did not. This black mark against Fyodor's name has been a long time coming, but despite protestations and initial disbelief, even a quick look through the two stories will show people starting to ask questions of their idol, and all this despite outright lying on behalf of the Russian wannabe. A quick read of question 5 and its answer will yield such insights as:

"I never do script-kiddie style "hack any random vulnerable box on the Internet" cracking..."
"Of course, I only do this when the company is paying me to do so"
and most amusingly: "Now some people might ask how you gain these skills without practising on other networks first"

How indeed, Fyodor? He simply pretended to break into the machine. Word is not yet out on how he then pretended to take screenshots and place them on his web-page for all to pretend to see.

The list

(5,55,161) Faggot | ProTools is a large reason modern music sucks
(0,10,12) Samir Gupta | Health concerns
(0,8,15) Samir Gupta | My perspective as an ex-SEGA employee
(0,10,55) APA | Standardized tests
(4,8,21) APA | How I feel about programming competitions
(-1,11,18) I Am The Owl | Sexist.
(1,15,22) GoatPigSheep | extremely dangerous
(0,8,8) Jon Romero | Thanks for reading
(-1,10,33) APA | Overkill
(-1,7,16) Samir Gupta | Too much overkill I think
(-1,12,46) GoatPigSheep | Jon Carmack: dooming society?
(3,8,15) Sheetrock | Then work on an alternative...
(2,10,14) APA | I loved Gentoo
(4,15,29) Adam Rightmann | nmap is easily fooled
(2,12,45) APA | The reason people steal music
(4,12,19) Sheetrock | Confused
(-1,17,41) APA | What's the point, really?
(-1,9,27) APA | Spam is just good business
(-1,16,25) APA | This is all false information
(-1,20,37) APA | Um, this can't be right
(-1,13,17) APA | This is all wrong
(4,12,19) Samir Gupta | We've investigated GameCube clusters too
(0,10,16) Samir Gupta | A perspective from a competitor...
(3,9,11) Sheetrock | Not ready for precision?
(-1,9,16) Adam Rightmann | Will a Sino-Lunar base be our Sputnik?

Honourable mentions

  • We'd like to thank Eric for focusing his talent and energy on slashdot this past month. It is sad to see his latest account with negative karma.
  • Re-live the joy of $$$exyGal.
  • GoatPigSheep reminds us that not all is what it seems - there are absurd liberal myths all around.

That's it for this month.

Journal Journal: Trollback for March and April 2003 20

Welcome to Trollback for March and April 2003.

Trollback is now entirely human edited. We've probably missed a few good trolls that an automatic system may have identified. If you feel that a troll has missed out, please put a link in the comments section and we will edit this edition.

Without further ado, the list in chronological order. Remember: there are no losers, just slashbots.

(5,16,34) b.foster | They're running an ACADEMIC network
(4,19,45) RM 101 | Re:Size..
(-1,20,59) (1337) God | Society loves violence
(3,14,45) Bob Abooey | Illegal????
(5,13,24) Tim_F | I would suggest cbc.ca
(2,10,18) b.foster | "Baby with the bathwater dept" eh?
(2,9,17) b.foster | How the internet triumphed over Communism
(-1,14,19) Anonymous Coward | Lex Talionis is a morally bankrupt code
(4,14,79) Sheetrock | Wait...
(0,10,22) Anonymous Coward | No excitement here
(2,76,362) unterderbrucke | No wonder
(-1,23,62) unterderbrucke | Look idiots
(-1,12,24) Dr. Stanley Blitzer | As a professor at MIT
(-1,17,37) unterderbrucke | Most open source coders (repeat of "No Wonder")
(1,24,33) Sheetrock | Doubtful.
(2,19,42) sulli | No deal
(0,19,34) I Am The Owl | Total ripoff
(3,14,29) Sheetrock | I don't understand

Well, as controversial a figure as he may be in the trolling community, unterderbrucke dominates this edition of trollback. On this sort of form is it possible that he will be accepted by the general trolling community? Only time will tell. But like him or despise him, 76 direct replies is impressive stuff. Truly a trolling icon.

Honourable mentions
The following are posts that made us laugh - some are trolls, some are just purely funny.

Moving slightly away from Slashdot, we can see a certain Mr Katz has been active again, if only by proxy. On that bastion of pseudo-intellectual homoerotic wankery, K5, user Hide The Hamster reposted a JonKatz article that survived the editing and voting queues to be posted to section by the ever vigilant anti-Slashdotters. What, can't find it? Maybe that's because the benevolent dictator benevolently deleted it. Community voting at its finest.

Not to worry, electricmonk managed to improve on this by getting another Katz article posted to the front page. Well, it seems that is has also been benevolently deleted by the benevolent dictator. Praise be to community edited sites! Congratulations to Egg Troll for getting something original and hysterically funny to the front page in the mean time.

Finally, we'd like to bring attention to the most stereotypical slashbot of all time, Hanzosan, complete with stalker and/or dedicated biter. Hanzosan needs a lesson in economics, and IATO is just the one to drum it into his thick skull.

Well, that is it for this month. We intend to post trollback whenever there is a sufficient number of good posts worth celebrating, or at least every month. A round of applause please.

Journal Journal: February Trollback 9

The heat is on, the time is right,
It's time for you, for you to play the game.
'Cause people are coming, everyone's trying,
Trying to be the best that they can,
When they're going for... going for... Gold.

Yes, that's right; after a 3 month hiatus we are back with a monthly trollback, and who else could be more worthy to announce such a monumental occasion than the notorious UK paedophile Henry Kelly.

Moving on faster than Anna Nicole Smith after J. Howard Marshall II died, it is hard to post the monthly trollback without talking about the recent changes around slashdot:

Junis is orphaned:

Yes, trollback has lost all hope, and has resigned to the reality that JonKatz has left. There are few who would believe that Taco has the balls to fire him, so trollback can only assume that he resigned having accomplished his life goal: free advertisement to 500,000 geeks for his book about a dog. Granted that article is nearly a year old, but as his last work it seems wrong not to mention it as tribute to the greatest troll who ever lived. Truly an American icon

Zoo:

Apparently Taco, not satisfied with claims of Slashdot circle-jerks, decided to make it official. Now, not only is it possible to tease the cock by marking him as friend, creating an extended black-book of potential booty-calls through the FOAF function, but it is possible to restrict journals such that comments can only come from friends and friends-of-friends. In entirely unrelated news, this mode is used exclusively by Taco, presumably to keep those pesky non-brown-nosers away. Well fortunately open source strikes again.

Moderations:

In what can only be an effort to stop me, moderations are now no longer available. Well, you can see the three most prevalent moderation types. As percentages. Which is fine because our glorious emperor finds it "a much more simple and elegant view. Much more useful since for comments with few mods, its irrelevant, and with many mods, I really only want to know what the dominant couple of mods are ".

Special awards:

So, with the crud out of the way, we shall move on to some special mentions, such as $$$$$exygal who has acquired a staggering >1000 fans. I am glad that he has shown the somewhat male population of slashdot to be the pathetic, lonely fucks they are. And by "he", I of course mean "she".

Another worthy mention is everyone's favorite fatty Vlad, who has decided that a man without stalking and harassment for all the family is a man without joy, hence breaking the silence to beg for punishment. Or maybe he's out to use his elite martial arts skills. Have any of you seen The Next Karate Kid? No, thought not. But if you had, that's what Vlad is like, but in the heavyweight division.

One last congratulation for tps12, who has managed to tps12 who has posted a magnificent 1337 comments. Further praise must be awarded for his new persona, who has managed to get a bite on his sig / name for virtually every comment. Trollback and the community salute you.

The editors endorse trolling:

Well, how else would you explain a month that includes not only a Valentine's day article, but an article entitled "Why Nerds Are Unpopular". Could it be that we have misjudged the entire of the Slashdot team and that the entire site is a troll? Bwahahaha! Of course not. But pleasing to see geeks freely talk about what losers they were at school. Trollback never went to school of course, as I was pieced together one sunny day to keep you all up-to-date, however I think it is safe to say that were I at school I would not be laughed at, bullied or otherwise tortured. Or at least if I were, I would not admit it in front of half-a-million people.

I am the alpha and the omega; the beginning and the end:

...But mainly the omega. Trollback is sad to announce he is to leave the site. Trollback does not hide behind proxies and has been IP banned. Trollback has no will to continue.

Bring on the tryptophan, kids, it's Thanksgiving! Time for all good Americans to crowd themselves onto buses, trains, freeways, and anything else that will make them easy targets for terrorist attacks in a mad, crazed rush to go somewhere and relax. With all the changes going on in Slashcode these days, it'd be easy to lose your head - some of Slashdot's three and four year old spelling errors and outstanding Tacoisms (like empty Parent links) have suddenly gone missing, leaving a lot of Cowboys ready to Call it a Night. But don't flip out and throw your baby in the street just yet, kids - we've brought the dressing for everybody's favorite dried out turkey .

Editor's choice

The problem with scoring Trolls is that sometimes, even the losers are winners (you read Slashdot; we're sure your familiar with the concept). Just because a post doesn't have the world's highest Voodoo doesn't mean you can't get a laugh out of it. For this reason, the editorial staff here at the secret Trollback headquarters decided to pick a few more of the best and brightest, for obvious reasons:

Scary, dirty Toys for Tots

A long time ago, the Trollback team made some heavy-handed accusations, claiming that Slashteam was mass-moderating posts by users they disliked. We were of course met with general disbelief until the Post of Doom, after which mass-moderation and Editor Modbombing made it into the Slashdot FAQ. We're still asserting that Slashbots and Linux users in general are dirty, unwashed pedophiles, but now we've got proof. Behold, ladies and gentlemen: lock up the kids and make sure they wash . Probably the best argument against Linux in the classroom... ever?

Would you like to play a game?

Just how important is it to get your friends list jacked up as high as possible? Well, to those who like to play Slashdot The Game, it's the New Karma. FortKnox has spent months rambling on in his journal about... stuff... in order to get as many fans as possible. In a few short days, ekrout has almost surpassed FortKnox with a grand total of 351 fans. How? The same way you get anything done on Slashdot: make it stupid and make it easy. See ekrout's signature for more info. If you're wondering how YOU can participate in this new penis length contest, we feel that it's only fair to provide everyone with a means of keeping score. So, released under the TPL, we present the Slashdot New Karma Tracker, a Shell(tm) script for keeping score. Please note that this script will only work on Lunix 8.0 certified systems:

wget --quiet -O- http://slashdot.org/~$1/fans -U "The Slashdot New Karma Tracker (tm)(r) TPL 1.0"| grep fans | grep "HREF=\"//slashdot" | wc | gawk '{printf("You have %s fans. PATHETIC.\n",$1)}'

Remember to put it in a file and put your account name in as a command line argument. And don't engage in scripted abuse or you'll get the Flaming Gay Pink Screen of Death.

Doing your duty

What is FatWallet? No, no, put that thing away... FatWallet is a message board where American Citizens post messages about where the best sale prices are. Cool idea, right? Well, perhaps, but only if you're trying to DESTROY CORPORATE AMERICA. FatWallet made Slashdot frontpage news for trying to exploit innocent corporations and getting busted by the DMCA. Fortunately, our agents were already working to stem the tide at FatWallet by:

The Trollback team officially salutes everyone working at sites like FatWallet across the Internet to protect America.

The Trolls are out there

We'd like to take a moment - well, maybe just a sentence - to recognize the hard work of our brothers [wisc.edu] in arms [supernet.net].

Miscellanea

Have you ever seen this Secret Slashdot Design Document ? It's very (+1)Informative, and it makes a lot of CmdrTaco's design decisions a lot more transparent. We've been working hard to replace Jon Katz but as you can see in the feature request, nobody understands the perils of reading at Threshold -1. Now go buy a T-shirt .

Journal Journal: Daily TrollBack FAQ 8

We of the TrollBack Team have started a new programme to help satisfy your taste for TrollBack in between issues. Daily TrollBack takes advantage of our extensive troll monitoring system to bring you the best trolls of the day in an automated way. This journal shall serve to help allay any questions you may have.
  • Where will Daily TrollBacks be posted?

Because of the annoying large number of lamers and modbombers lurking in sid 20721, we have decided to post future editions of Daily TrollBack to sid 31337. You can always check TrollBack's posting history if you think you've missed an issue.

  • Hey! I thought you said this was a daily TrollBack. Why do you skip every other day?

It was indeed the original plan to post every day. Unfortunately, our in-house testing has shown there just aren't enough interesting posts a day to make a truly Daily TrollBack entertaining. Our current bidaily posting schedule keeps the overall quality much higher.

  • You clods! How could you not include this-or-that awesome troll post???

The postings are fully automated. That comment either was posted by a currently unmonitored account, or simply didn't get enough replies or moderations to make it onto the Daily TrollBack score sheet.

  • This post you linked isn't really a troll at all! It sucks.

Once again, the system is fully automated. A piece of crap is bound to slip in every once in a while.

  • What is this "voodoo factor" you rank postings by?

    1.2*DirectReplies + Moderations + TotalReplies/5

  • How can I tell if an account is currently being monitored?

You can check the list here.

  • Is this the end of full-blown TrollBacks?

Not at all! A full, human-edited edition TrollBack complete with the commentary and ASCII art you've all come to know and love will be posted to our journal every month, as always.

If you have any other questions, either post them to this journal, or email them to us at <trollback # ziplip , com>.

Yes, autumn is in the air. Amber trees, dark skies, and chilly rock hard nipples are on us like Anna Nicole - uninvited and unstoppable. The more things change, the more the change at Slashdot remains the same, and it's our job to celebrate the unstoppable twit parade. So put down the knives, take off the hockey mask and stop playing 'American Pie' with that pumpkin, because it's time for Halloween Trollback.

What is the EFF-PEE?

Are first posts a good thing or a bad thing? I'm sure that our dear readers have their own answer, but getting CmdrTaco's take on the issue is more complicated. Slashdot's old sql datadump file used to start out by dumping the first comment into your Slash setup entitled 'First Post!' which went on to warn that 'there will be a bunch of faceless anonymous morons who will attack you for no reason' - in short, a typical First Post troll. The exact same file went on to text filter the phrase 'First Post' out of our subject lines, meaning that only Taco's troll was allowed, and giving birth to such explosively creative catchphrases as 'Frost Pist' and 'Eff Pee'. The filter against 'First Post' has been removed, but the automatic First Posting remains unedited. I guess the answer is that it depends who's doing the FP'ing.

And as we've been told before, there's nothing worse in the world than a post marked +5 Funny. Now it seems that the ultimate Bad Thing is a +5 Funny AC post... Which leads us to the question: Just how terrible is it when someone AC posts a 'First Post!' which unlike CmdrTaco's automated FP is actually funny? The answer appears to be that if this happens enough, these posts will be capped at a max score of +4.

With this in mind, we'd like to take this moment to salute the following first posters for their contributions toward yet another arbitrary, nonsensical, gratuitous gatekeeper - without byzantine rules like this, there'd be nothing fun to do here!

Moderation is not broken!

We'd like to take a moment to salute one of our trolls for managing to achieve for the briefest of moments the highly elusive Score:5 Troll. Truly a Slashdot Icon.

ASCII Art is exclusively destructive.

Five years of intense research have so far failed to yield a regular expression which will prevent ASCII art. ASCII doesn't troll people, trolls do... but as long as ASCII art is outlawed, only outlaws will have ASCII art! We'll keep you posted in case a solution is found.

As always feedback is welcome. Have a happy Halloween, and keep the trolls coming.

Looking at the sorry state of trolltalk and the sheer stupidity of the more vocal "trolls" of today, it's easy to think that /. trolling is dead. Through this very special episode of TrollBack, we hope to prove that, like rock and roll and *BSD, trolling is here to stay. For your enjoyment, here are twenty top-notch tidbits for your viewing pleasure:

It's Friday Dec 21, and this is Trollback.

trollback has a new format - in the spirit of ASCII-art choked lame walkthru guides for gamers obsessed with wasting their youth in front of a cathode ray tube, i bring you trolltalk, ASCII-enhanced. because imitation is the sincerest form of mockery. think of this as phrack, only without any real insight, technical knowledge, or redeeming value.

please, enjoy. eat your fill. and when you're done reading this issue, head over to the comment section and tell me how gay i am. thanks a bunch.

You people are tremendous assholes - low uid can't figure out that the signal is noise.

  • this guy may not be a troll, but his user bio is an excellent cut&paste template. the innocent/ignorant "former Microsoft intern" who "doesn't get the Redhat business model" could really be played up, especially if combined with a female ("i helped design the XP look & feel graphic-artist").
  • 12/20/2001 - Frank pointed out this excellent piece by the Cato Institute, a Microsoft-sponsored propoganda machine, just one paragraph of which will send the average bot into a froth before he can hit Reply. Feel free to plagarize.
  • 12/17/2001 - Roblimo makes a rare post regarding all the crazy "conspiracy theorists" who think that Slashdot is being run by special interest groups, like Users for instance. since i'm pretty sure he's talking about people like me, i'd just like to remind Robin that i know about what they're doing with the drinking water.
  • 12/17/2001 - Klerk got banned in the now familiar pattern of a User censoring a user for "scripted abuse" that didn't involve a script. notice here that the ban page has a bright, flaming pink background (this is not a browser setting but the actual HTML). speculation abounds on the message Rob was trying to get across with this.
  • 12/03/2001 - for those not acquainted with the term "User", you'll need to read this bug report, in which Rob states that "Admins are Users too". since he apparently capitalizes it to keep track, we do too.
  • as always, mail your suggestions, submissions, emissions or whatever to operation_mongoose at ziplip.com
