Comment Experience (Score 1) 479

If you are seeking a career outside of academia you need to have some projects under your belt that you can use as reference for interviews. Tell them about what projects you worked in school. Tell them about the challenges you faced and the successes and failures you encountered. Contribute to some open source projects using languages you are interested in working in. No one is going to hire an unproven candidate, especially not for the salary that a Ph.D is going to command. Think about what the employer is seeking and mold yourself to fit that deacription. Companies don't think about YOUR needs, they are thinking about their own. You must make the case that you can provide value as a resource to them.

When you look at the TCO, Macs are not significantly more expensive that PCs considering they don't need to get upgraded as often. I just retired a Mac laptop that I had been using for 9 years, the only reason I retired it is because it's was from the PowerPC CPU days and apps that I wanted to use couldn't run on it.

Noise canceling headphones work great for constant, predictable noise (case fan hum, airplane engines) but for non-repeating random noise such and people walking by talking they don't work well at all. You're better off getting some sealed earbuds like some sennheiser CX400s and listening to something in those. Background music without any sort of vocals usually makes for good studying music.

Comment still need a dedicate land line (Score 1) 445

I telecommute for work and I used a Logitech Skype phone with an incoming phone number for about a year. Several hours of my day were spent on conference calls. I ended up having to ditch the Skype phone because of numerous issues. Majority of the time the phone would work fine but there were issues will calls that lasted longer than 30 minutes. Calls would randomly drop, the voice wave would change frequency and become super slowed down, they'd stop hearing me, etc. Had to go back to using a regular land line. I also tried to survive just using my cellphone but the reception in my home office isn't great so my coworkers would have a hard time hearing me.

Comment Less work, more life (Score 5, Insightful) 969

In European counties such as Denmark where on the whole the standard of living and quality of life are better than the US, people work less than we do. They have more time with their families enjoying life instead of killing themselves at the office. Americans are trained to feel like they have to overwork in order to get ahead, we should really strive towards following the European model.
