Comment Job interview question (Score 2) 401

Q: How do you calculate the chances that the first global pandemic in modern times happens within 20km of a research center that tests animal virus transmission to monkeys

A: Divide the population around a 20 mile radius of such centers (you can probably count them on one hand) by the total world population.

It's a damn small number. Read the linked article, it was written in 2017: The prospect of ramping up opportunities to inject monkeys with pathogens also worries, rather than excites, him: “They can run, they can scratch, they can bite.”

The current WHO plan is to delay the virus as much as possible in order to prepare the health systems to handle the load once the restrictions are eased.
There are some hotspot areas now - New York/USA, Lombardia/Italy, Madrid/Spain, but once restrictions are eased - every major city will become a hotspot.
The demand for ventilators will skyrocket, at least in nations that don't have the discipline and culture of countries like S.Korea, Taiwan, Singapore and China.

From the "Space oven" info - it relies on infrared radiation to heat the cookies, similar to toasters. Using a toaster to bake a cookie is not a good idea - it will scorch the outermost layer, leaving the inside unbaked. An oven similar to the popular air fryers will work much better, but it will open another can of worms - you have to firmly secure the cookies in place and filter the air from small particles. An air fryer with a centrifuge and an air filter around it may do the job. After opening the air filter should continue to suck air.

This is the right thing to do - reward original reporting rather than just re-posting. This in turn will make news outlets hire more reporters and increase original content instead of focusing on rehashing the news that stay on top of the feed. The initial plan was to produce 35GW when the Gigafactory 1 is finished. Right now the plant is far from finished, with only a fraction of the whole building built, and yet it is expected to reach 35GW this year and when finished to be at 3 times the originaly planned capacity - at 105GW, and on top of that to have enough space to produce battery packs for model 3 and soon Y, S and X, without expanding the plant size. All this is happening because of advancements in production efficiency and battery power density. So it's not surprising Tesla chose to optimize efficiency and density instead of adding new lines. Their recent purchase of Maxwell Technologies is also an indication of that. I don't get why everybody is acting surprised and spells doom and gloom.
