Teacher Found Guilty of Endangering Kids Due to Spyware 597

nursegirl writes "Norwich, Conn seventh grade teacher, Julie Amero has been convicted of four counts of risk of injury to a minor after her classroom PC displayed pornographic pop-ups in class. While an expert for the defendant said he had discovered spyware on her PC that had been downloaded from a hairstyling site, the local police investigator claimed that the spyware had been downloaded from actively visiting porn sites. Amero testified that she had told four other teachers and the assistant principal about the popups, but received no assistance. The school's internet filtration software was not working because it's license had expired. Amero faces up to forty years in prison."

Journal Journal: Rosetta Code -- The Rosetta Stone of Programming 4

I'm excited to announce the opening of Rosetta Code, a wiki with the lofty goal of being the Rosetta Stone of programming. Rosetta Code takes the intent of Hello World--showing a simple programming task in the author's language of choice--and applies it to a variety of programming tasks.

Special thanks go to a number of Slashdotters who've helped me build and refine the site over the last week, by way of my SLashdot Journal.

Microsoft

Submission + - Why does everyone hate Microsoft?

MrSplog writes: I know this may sound like a somewhat stupid question (I can practically smell the 'idiot' and 'noob' tags coming) however, I'm doing a short project on Microsoft and its impact on society. A considerable part of this project has been looking into people's perceptions of Microsoft and the heavily negative bias of that perception. Slashdot being one of the world's forefront leaders on Microsoft hatred, I wanted to know: just why do you hate Microsoft? Please be as descriptive and as thorough as you like. Counter arguments and positive comments also appreciated (too optimistic?!).
Nintendo

Journal Journal: Nintendo, Wii Have a Problem 3

The site Wiihaveaproblem.com has many pictures, videos and testimonials about the Wii and users who accidentally destroy their property. Come one, come all, to the batting cages and bowling alleys of your own living room, and see exactly what's getting batted and bowled around. And think about strengthening your wrist strap.

Submission + - NASA reveals signs of recent flowing water on Mars

192939495969798999 writes: ""NASA photographs have revealed bright new deposits seen in two gullies on Mars that suggest water carried sediment through them sometime during the past seven years. "These observations give the strongest evidence to date that water still flows occasionally on the surface of Mars," said Michael Meyer, lead scientist for NASA's Mars Exploration Program, Washington." More from TFA: "The shapes of these deposits are what you would expect to see if the material were carried by flowing water," said Michael Malin of Malin Space Science Systems, San Diego. "They have finger-like branches at the downhill end and easily diverted around small obstacles.""

Journal Journal: [Z80] A more complete Flash ROM programmer

Tonight, I made a more complete flash ROM programmer, and actually put a program in the ROM and ran it. (It needs a little more work - I spotted some bugs in the status check code, a product of it being late and me being tired - something that really gets you when writing asm!)

United States

Submission + - Hiring For The First Time

Rick Zeman writes: "For the first time ever, I have to interview and hire (I'm not management, so an exception is being made) what we call a "PC Technician" which is an entry-level IT person. While actual computer knowledge and how we do things can be taught, how to think, and the aptitude for troubleshooting can't be. Question: In the readers' experiences, what are the best (legal in the US!) questions to ask an entry-level candidate to really evaluate them? They don't have the resumes, the skills, or the experience yet, so I think they have to be judged on other factors that are harder to qualify."

Journal Journal: RPG: Using Magic Creatively in RPGs 1

From perpetual motion machines to illusory firestorms to party favors, there's all sorts of things you can do with magic in the fictional realm of pen-and-paper role-playing games. Need party favors for a birthday party? Levitate frogs. Is the construction near a client's business-district coffee shop too noisy for business? Cast a silence spell on the coffee shop.

Journal Journal: RPG: Music in RPGs 1

I've got a CD called Pure Moods vol. 2, and it's got some interesting music on it.

For a fantasy setting, I especially like the first two tracks. The first track, Loreena McKennitt's Mummer's Dance, sounds like it might work for a generic bard band performance. The second track, Montezuma, might be overheard near an Orc encampment.

Submission + - Moon Base Announced by NASA

indigest writes: NASA announced plans today to build a permanent base on the moon by 2024. The tentative plans are to build the base on one of the moon's poles, which constantly receive light from the sun and have less daily temperature fluctuation. The base would then be used as a launching site for future space explorations.

Journal Journal: FUD

I am tired of hearing people dismiss as FUD every opinion they disagree with.

First, let's define FUD. It stands for "Fear, Uncertainty, and Doubt" (or alternatively "Fucked Up Disinformation"). To say someone is spreading FUD is to say that they are maliciously spreading misinformation with the objective of creating baseless fear. It does not just mean that the information is wrong, but that the author is being dishonest.

Submission + - Layoffs and CEO resignation at OSDL

lisah writes: "Big changes are afoot at Open Source Development Labs (OSDL) with today's surprise announcement of the departure of CEO Stuart Cohen and the layoff of nine other employees. Details are still emerging about what exactly this means for OSDL but according to a preliminary announcement, Cohen is 'leaving to pursue other open source opportunities' and OSDL is 'refocusing the scope of [their] work to better align resources with [their] revenues...'"
