Description: Imagine real light. The power of 500 LEDs in one bulb. Imagine light that doesn't interfere with your wireless signals. Imagine an end to flickering and eye strain inducing blue light. What your grandma and grandpa told you about the past is true. Bask in the radiance of real light.

Comment Re:Lawsuit? (Score 1) 143

Incorrect. It does violate.

You can go through Red Hat's spywall and register for a "free" time limited subscription.

However, upon expiration of that subscription, even though you still possess the binaries (which still work, but honestly, it doesn't matter), the fact that you can no longer get the source is a violation of the GPL.

For a "customer", it is similar. Let's say I pay Red Hat for "support" and now have a longer lasting term subscription. As long as I continue to pay, I can continue to renew that subscription, etc. However, once the subscription expires (for whatever reason), once again, I have distributed binaries under the GPL for which I can no longer have the source.

This is not a gray area. It is a violation.

Red Hat (of old) used to understand the GPL. I urge anyone that still believes in FOSS at Red Hat to stand up for FOSS and in particular, the GPL.

Comment Most seem to missing perhaps a key point (Score 1) 284

It's a culture thing. It's not that people can choose personally to go "all Greta" back to the stone age, it's just that life was very different in the past culturally. Not saying it didn't have the same problems, but the toxic filth wasn't so "everyday" as it is now. People seemed to be happier and less stressed out.

That is, a return to a simpler, better life (even with the complexities and inconveniences, nobody thought twice about them) would be difficult unless the whole world did this. Maybe climate change/ecology advocates will "win" and we will go backwards? Perhaps will will one day miss our technological "past" (even if it was killing the planet)?

I do miss verbal conversations, that is, ones that were actually listened to. Maybe that's what causes most of the toxic culture of today? We all play with our phones instead of listening to each other.

Comment Large HDD disk subsystems spin down (Score 1) 154

While one can argue that subsystems never spin down, reasonable enterprise systems spin down HDDs. And AFAIK, the power consumption there is far less than SSD at that point. So perhaps the power angle isn't nearly as big a differentiator as one might think. But it does depend. SSDs still have a lot to prove (sadly)... the focus has been on performance, but there are other considerations as well. The biggest being price... which has gotten "better", but let me know where there's a reasonably affordable 8TB SSD. Other considerations are offline data shelf life and even longevity (as weird as that may sound today).

You can't compare "stupid HDD", that is 10K and 15K rpm drives, to SSD. Though I understand "the point" with regards to what "stupid" suppliers sell to the masses. In large scale, cool running slow rpm drives in massive spindle quantities may deliver so much greater value over SSD in large storage scenarios. Anyway, sure, go full on "stupid".... you can make a case. But not everyone is stupid.

And finally, Pure Storage's proprietary storage bricks... well... you could probably run hundreds of 15K spinning disks for decades and get more value. Just saying.

Comment What is worse, Smart TVs!!!! (Score 2) 207

The only thing worse than a $30 Roku is the absolutely horrid Smart TV. Btw, even if it's a Roku TV. Tying a short lived device to an expensive panel is stupid. And don't get me started with the proprietary OS's like Tizen and WebOS... I mean it's like the worst app experience ever made. Sure, there's a tiny handful of "ok" apps on it, but even the majors can suck at any moment because the platform is just plain bad.

Buy your panel, attach your favorite streaming device to it. Fixed. Well, fixed "better" than using a Smart TV.

Don't brick your expensive functional panel with a brain dead OS or with a deprecated streaming experience.

In a strange and of course, completely unrelated event, Pfizer's quarterly numbers and predictions come in as being "low" and they lost $43 billion in valuation.

But, and of course, as our honest and trustworthy savior, they seem to be working on a one shot vaccine for the near future. I wonder why? It will be an annual vaccine of course. Ideally priced at less than $130USD.
