Its not that farfetched.

Back in the early days of television there was an actor's uproar against recording of performances. They preferred that each time a show was to be on it would be broadcast live as it was performed - much like a play. Afterall, if you can just record the actors once and replay that an infinite number of times, how will the actors make a living?

As with all other such cases, eventually we worked it out. You can't fight the progress of technology.

Title says universe has no dark matter. The summary quotes indicate no dark energy.

I'm a little skeptical of both. They're both effectively a placeholder/corrective value to make the math work.

Sometimes that is indeed the case. Using effectively a placeholder value like this looking at the orbit of Uranus they found Neptune. Other times it doesn't. Looking at the orbital data for Mercury they deduced using a placeholder value the existence of the planet Vulcan. In that case it just turned out that their base math was wrong.

This article seems to posit that our math was just wrong in the first place and dark energy isn't needed.

Counting the latter tells us more about how cranky people are about the enshittification of Windows. Cranky enough to put in the effort to install and learn another OS.

It doesn't have to be just being "cranky". The reality is Windows costs money, and Linux is free. Granted on an OEM computer the user never sees the cost but on a home built computer its still there. For gaming you really need Windows since games still run natively, but outside of that so much stuff has moved to web apps that a Linux machine with a browser is fine for many.

I personally don't get the "enshitification" argument. From a quality standpoint its not that bad. More security issues sure, but for stability and speed? A Linux desktop distro doesn't seem appreciably better. It does hurt to drop that $100 for the OS on a new build though.

Why focus on GNU? The average desktop user doesn't touch half the GNU stuff on a day to day basis.

Stallman is a narcissist with poor social skills who was jealous that the part that he worked on wasn't getting as much recognition.

The reality is that GNU/Linux/Xorg/Chromium/KDE just doesn't roll off the tongue, so we just call the general ecosystem "Linux".

Consider it like New York, New York. There's a city and a state. They have the same name and you determine which one is being discussed by context. Linux is a kernel. Its also an OS.

Yeah, both of my siblings have moved to just using their phones for all internet access. They're not tech savy at all but enjoy social media and online shopping.

Honestly if it weren't for business desktops I'm not sure how much longer the desktop would have as a mass market device. Sure geeks are always going to want one, but it could eventually shrink to a much smaller niche market like it was back in the 1980's.

If it got to that point Linux might eventually become the "default" desktop because all the commercial players have moved onto other platforms.

Especially older people who are aging out of easily using a desktop computer.

I've found the opposite. Older people tend to not adapt to touch screens as well, but stick a keyboard and mouse in front of them and they're fine.

Younger people on the other hand are more comfortable with touch screens. Particularly since many/most of them are no longer learning touch typing so the screen feels faster versus a physical keyboard.
