Submission + - Will Linux Win the Next Presidential Election?

i_like_spam writes: Douglas Karr has posted an interesting breakdown, complete with bar charts, of the operating systems and server software used by the websites for 23 declared and undeclared presidential candidates. The breakdown shows that there is nearly an equal split between Linux and Windows servers among the whole candidate pool. More interesting, all of the Democratic candidates except for Hillary favor Linux or FreeBSD. 69% of the Republican candidates, in contrast, prefer Windows. Is this preference for OSS or Microsoft a true reflection of differing political philosophies? And, more importantly, will Linux win the next election?

Submission + - Morgan Stanley to Own Walmart Solar Power (environmentalleader.com)

mdsolar writes: "Investment banking firm Morgan Stanley will own/finance the solar power systems installed by SunPower on Walmart's California stores. From the article:

The customer pays the financing partner for the solar electricity generated over a long-term power purchase agreement. At the end of the term specified under the agreement, the customer typically has the option to renew the agreement, transfer the equipment to a new site, or purchase the system outright from the financing partner.
When investment banking money starts acting like this, we are beginning to see a major shift in how we generate power. Stories on Macy's and Target stores getting solar power are also linked. They join Kohl's, BJ's, Costco, Staples and Tesco in the big box retail sector."

Submission + - Can GNOME GMAE Initiative Be Successful?

An anonymous reader writes: GNOME's Mobile & Embedded Initiative (GMAE) is making the rounds, but can it be a viable option for carriers? Will they choose to ignore it? Author Matt Hartley writes, "In the end, I believe that in order for GMAE to be successful outside of unique projects like OLPC , it needs to firmly grasp the concept of what a corporation really is. It is an entity that is looking for a return on its investment — pure and simple. Show the carriers of the world how to do this and GMAE will be wildly successful similar to other mobile platforms.

Feed Turn your OS X and Linux-based machine into a FON Spot (engadget.com)

Filed under: Desktops, Laptops, Wireless, Networking

Not one to dwell too heavily on the past, FON is apparently already moving beyond its newfangled partnership with Time Warner, and has now caved to giving Mac and Linux users the ability to get in on the action. The latest FON Spot software now appears in a beta form for OS X and Linux (preferably Ubuntu) users, allowing Ethernet-connected machines to share excess bandwidth with others via WiFi. Notably, it's even supposed to work if connected via 3G, but we can't imagine your carrier being all too pleased with such a scheme. Per usual, the company warns of its beta nature and insinuates that problems could arise, but if you're still not deterred, be sure to hit the read link and get your respective download on.

Submission + - Blu-Ray Drive For Apple Laptops But Not From Apple

Sean Jackson writes: "Fastmac has beaten Apple to the Blu-Ray punch and has a new slimline Blu-Ray drive that works in Powerbooks, iBooks, mac minis and a few other systems. Sure it's pricey ($800) but you have to admit burning 50 GB (more like 45 GB when all is said and done) is pretty sweet. More information about the drive is here and here. Fastmac says that playing Blu-Ray movies isn't currently supported since there is no software player however several solutions are in the works and there is always a chance 10.5 will include it. Hopefully this means that Apple isn't far behind and will be including it with the next Macbook and Macbook Pro revisions. Mac fans cross your fingers!"

Submission + - Adobe open sources Flex SDK under MPL

andy_from_nc writes: "Adobe announced that they are open sourcing their Flex SDK under the Mozilla Public License incrementally by December. This move comes on the heels of Microsoft's announcement of their Silverlight and Adobe's CEO's criticism of it. The move will likely please other open source developers who use Flex like me and offer hope that we'll see a full open source version of Flash one day. You can read Adobe's FAQ on the move as well."
