To win the Loebner competition, software programs must mimic human conversation. Such programs are known as "chatting robots" or, more often, "chatterbots" or simply "bots."
I have never heard them called anything other than "chatbots". And "bots" can refer to a variety of small programs. Then again, what can you expect from Salon?
