Wish I had some mod-points. I agree, pigeons truly are rats with wings and they spread lots of diseases. So what would be the alternative to shooting them? Poison? Yes let them die slowly...
More birds of prey could be an alternative but that would probably be a more slow method than getting shot plus that everyone with small dogs getting snatched would start complaining :)

Curiously, Finland remains one of those countries where there's no general legal requirement to carry identification papers or indeed even to have any - and some people actually don't. (There's presidential election going on here right now, and every now and then people come to vote without papers, and there are a number of ways they can, including bringing along someone who can testify they're who they say they are.)

Unfortunately you actually do:
"In 2006 the directive on the right to move freely (2004/38/EC) was implemented, meaning that passportless travel is allowed in the entire European Union, if having a national identity card from an EU country. For some a passport is necessary anyway, since not all countries issue such cards for their citizens, and because Sweden requires a passport when travelling from that country to EU countries outside Schengen."

So we traded away the need for a passport when traveling in exchange for needing an ID in our own countries. Congratulations...
Now the police in Finland is probably not checking the ID of everyone but the rules are there if they would like to.

That is because people don't know their history regarding EU. When it first started it was an economic union. The target was to help companies, not the people. Since then it has changed it's name but I belive that its root values are still there. There are people who try to change it though.

Are you going to make a list of what financial transactions politicians are allowed to make and who they are allowed to make them with?

Actually, in Sweden we have partialy solved this problem. Gifts from clients may only cost at max a certain value and this is in effect for anyone who is in the employment of the state or the city and not just politicians. Makes things easy, if the gift is above a certain value then it's a bribe. We have other problems though that you don't. There is a non disclosure law in effect for party donations. So we may know that the party Moderaterna got a couple of millions in donations but we can't tell if MacDonalds payed for the recent lowering of taxes for restuarants.

First thing I want to do when I get a suspicious pop up from UAC is the check the disc for the programs properties and so on and check the internet if it is a well known file or not. And what does UAC do? It blocks me from doing anything until I have pressed Yes or No.

I didn't manage to get this from the article but are reputable breeders allowed to charge for the sale of a dog for instance?

I have never seen a pet shop in Sweden btw that sells cats or dogs. All sold pure bred cats and dogs that I have heard of has been sold directly from a breeder. There are also quite few that make a living breeding cats or dogs in Sweden. Most consider it a hobby.

I'm a big fan of private business, but this is akin to the laws that prevent the government from competing with private business for anything - so instead of having electronic tax filing provided for free at the IRS site, we have to pay a private entity to do the filing for us. The IRS still has to have a back end paid for with tax money.

Wow, that must really suck. Here in Sweden we have at least three different ways to file our taxes all provided by Skatteverket (The department for taxes). A four page paper form is sent out to everyone with some pre-entered information. You can then either choose to fill out the form and send it in or you can logg on to their homepage and do you taxes there or you can simply send an SMS to confirm that all the pre-entered information was correct.
It's a bit more complicated for companies but we're getting there. And all free of charge. Don't think anyone ever considered that the citizens should pay for it. If Skatteverket wants money/information they get to pay for it themselves.

Firmware Troubles For Old Xbox 360s, Possibly PS3s As Well 196

Several readers have tipped news of firmware updates causing problems for both Microsoft's Xbox 360 and Sony's PlayStation 3. The Xbox issue was caused by a recent update thought to be preparing the platform for a new disc format that gives developers another 1GB or so of space to work with. As it turns out, the real purpose seems to be piracy countermeasures. Microsoft acknowledged the issue and promised that affected users would receive a new 360S console and a free year of Xbox Live to compensate. The PS3 problem was highlighted by reports of overheating consoles while playing L.A. Noire on the recently-released 3.61 firmware. Rockstar Games initially confirmed that the firmware was causing the overheating, but later backtracked. They issued a joint statement with Sony saying that neither the game nor the firmware was the culprit, leaving users wondering what else it could be.

Costs around $5/month, if I had a tablet this is what I would be using.

Remember a story of a kid who got suspended for wearing a pepsi t-shirt in school during a photo op for Coca Cola. Might have been vice versa.
