Comment who is responsible (Score 1) 584

But then if children watch porn on library computers, is the library liable for allowing access to age restricted content on their systems? If the man was viewing porn on a computer in a public place, then he could be thought of the same as showign porn mag to kids.... and that is pretty much a endangerment or Lude & Lascivious crime right there.

wow, finally a /. article that hits home for my state and industry. I was part of the supporters of 2 of Luna's 3 proposals this legislative year. This was the 1 proposal I was not in favor of. Partly because it shifted money out of the state for expensive gadgets / technology. And partly because teachers are already hampered enough as it is with idiotic curriculum dictated by district wide contracts with textbook grant related subsidies. Technology isn't by itself a magic bullet. The use of it and efficiency of how this plan is implemented will determine if this was forward thinking, or just pandering to a few computer makers looking for a big contract.

Comment Media Creators Lack Applications on Linux (Score 1) 1880

The major media creators of the world (with the exception of animation house render farms) are all created on Windows or Mac. Until Linux gets THOSE applications in native form, then the content creators will not be using Linux. Everyone else may have a better shot as things transition to a browser based application stack with Google-everything. But my video NLE will not be on Linux any time soon, neither will my audio mastering be done on Linux. it is all about the application stack.

well that might be cause for me to blow the dust off a reference book (or just hit up google) and try some c++ again... but it has been so long since I bothered with it.... 10years actually. but I'm also not in low level device control / OS level coding.

Unless you have regularly tried to chop up and burn 80GB of video data onto 4.3GB single sided discs... the idea seems ok. but after you have tried it, you realize you waste all yoru time tryign to find the individual clips that equal close to the capacity of a single DVD (assuming you chopped up the video by scenes or that your capture card correctly identified scene stops and starts to create new individual clips). I wasted hours and hours trying to take each project (roughly 80GB of data per shoot / project) and chop up the clips into groupings for each disc... and then burning the disc.... Much faster solution is either getting a drobo and maxing out the storage, or using individual drives.
