We have some older machines that we look after, that need to have the patches checked and blocked due to software/ hardware installed.

Those sorts of people should just install one of the free VM products (QEMU (linux) Virtual PC (Windows)) available for their machine, install the os and only use it when required.
There are also a few paid ones available.
Do this would provide a greater level of security.

Seriously someone who doesn't know how to use tail -F or cat and grep should NOT be admining a Unix based system.

The app to let your 'friends'/loved ones know that you are up to doing something that has a reasonable chance of ending out badly.
