In many countries in Europe you actually pay BOTH of those: $40 for every negative charge PLUS 20-30% (yearly) interest on deficit.
They are available for public inspection, even on TV. Just search YouTube for "maras bukele". Also, the fact they have been imprisoned does not mean they will have less access to a fair trial. Pre-trial detention is 100% legal.

You don't need to take the Government's word: maras members are proudly tatooed (full body, including face) with their maras signs. Now they are trying to remove those tatoos, even by burning their skin.

The whole country was terrified with 60 persons being killed per day in a 5 million population country. Bukele stopped that and even threatened the not-yet-imprisoned mara members to stop feeding the imprisoned mara members if they didn't stop their homicides

Someone forgot to state that in the f*cking article and in Slashdot: electricity is up 500% from 1 year ago. Government has been forced to lower (almost remove) taxes on electricity and even that is only saving 30% of the rise since last year. No, Spain's wind power story is not a success story. The obvious answer here is get an investor an acquire the landfill. Give the city another location and when the original landfill is yours, you do whatever you want with it.
So they want to make more money and climate change is (again) the pretext.
