Foreign workers have up until their arrival in no way contributed to America, it's economy or culture. There is nothing wrong with tribalism (to use your words). We as a culture and a people form a unique entity that is certainly correct in seeking to prosper.

As my children have rights by being my children that exceed the rights of other children, so Americans also have rights that exceed those of Non-Americans when in this country.

Similarly, by the same argument, I as an ex-H1B holder, a current green-card holder, and a future citizen have more of a right to be in this country and participate in its culture than you do.

Why?

It's quite simple. I had to put in a lot of sweat, blood and tears to stay here. You just did it by default.

Why did they even have to bother with the website when they had to go and redo a lot of the work to do background updates anyway?

Because back in the day - was it 1998? I can't remember - it was a website you could download updates from. There wasn't the need for automatic rollout of security updates back then. The automatic rollout stuff hit later - 2000 IIRC.

Why is it needed to get updates?

Even MS had to recognize that updates through ActiveX in a website have disadvantages and had to code an actual application (the systray update applet) to do things that they couldn't shoehorn IE into. But of course they had to stop one step short of making it fully functional, because if it was, the windows update site would look stupid, and one of the places it's not possible to remove IE from would no longer exist.

Apparently you've not seen Vista yet, but that's ok.

In Vista, the Windows Update site does nothing, other than tell you to open the Windows Update app.

As for why they had to code an actual application? It's so it can run in the background. Otherwise you'd need to open your browser every day to check for updates.

It still has drive letters, it still has a registry, it still sucks to create a new process, it still has a case-insensitive file system, it still uses backslash.

Even if Windows worked perfectly, it would still be Windows and it would still suck.

Pssst....

Drive letters are much easier to use than \dev\fd0\... or whatever. Much less typing involved.
The registry... well, you can argue for or against that. It works pretty well for keeping access control on settings in a per-user fashion though.
Creating processes? How so? (Oh, and btw... on Windows there's this really ultra new technology I'm sure you've never heard of called "threads"... apparently Linux has them too these days, so they must be doing something right).
Case-insensitive file system... and? Why do you think case sensitivity in your file system is a good thing? Or do you have lots of folders with files called "TheLazyDog" and "thelazydog"? You do realize that most people don't remember case, right?

As for using backslash... well shoot, I have to agree with you there. The OS is a total piece of shit for that reason, and I nearly vomit every time I type a file path because of it. Next thing you'll be telling me is that it uses CRLF for line endings.

The correct analogy in this case would be do you want to use a bread knife to slice bread, or would you rather use a fiddle-bow? (http://www.breadtopia.com/store/fiddle-bow-bread-knife.html)

Monopolies (both legally and economically) are bounded by the market from which consumers can choose alternative products. if you're talking about Apple, that means the computer systems market which is hardware software, some applications and some support all as a bundle. Consumers can choose an Apple system or a Dell or an HP or many others. Hence, no monopoly influence.

So if MS sold computer hardware - say they release the Windows X PC next year, and it's widely touted as THE BEST system to run Windows on - then you'd be fine with them bundling whatever software they wanted.

In fact, to get the BEST version of Windows, with all the features (eg. Windows Media Player, IE, backup software, etc), you'd have to buy their PC.

It's a fine line you're drawing. Be careful that you don't muss it up while you're hopping over it.

We are no longer babies needing their hand holding. The industry is maturing. We need less Microsoft and more competition, especially in the OS and Office type application markets.

That's nice. It has nothing to do with the cellphone market though.

By the way, will I be in position to change Verizon's new default search engine (Live Search) back to Google?

You obviously have no idea how Live Search mobile works. If you want to use Google's search, open your browser and go to Google. If you want to use Live Search Mobile, open the Live Search app and use that. It even has speech recognition. It's pretty bad-ass to be honest.
