Comment Re:Well.... (Score 4, Insightful) 558

Imperial measurements are functionally useless for everything that requires precision (eg construction, chemistry)....The only place where imperial measurements are used over metric, is wood building construction.

You're obviously not in the construction industry. Literally 99% of everything in US construction is Imperial... surveys, brick, block, re-bar, concrete slabs, lumber, insulation thickness, doors and frames, windows, ceiling tile, shower tile, cabinets, countertops, tub dimensions, hardware, fasteners, roofing, siding and trim, paint, truck widths, parking lots, etc. Sure a few globally distributed products may have alternate units, like a soccer field, but the origins of all our existing building stock, property measurements, and off-the-shelf components are native Imperial.

I've been waiting for US architecture and construction to go metric for 40 years, but I'm resolved my drawing sets are going to be Imperial the rest of my lifetime.

Comment better envelope is more than insulation (Score 5, Insightful) 80

(Full disclaimer: I'm an architect.)

Wrapping a building in an exterior "jacket" is only a small part of the larger building envelope. We've been hearing about insulation forever, but real professionals have been dealing with the larger building science issues of condensation, humidity entrapment and control, thermal bridging of intermediate conductive fasteners (brick anchors, nails, screws, etc.), even the embarrassingly large amount of bulk water that invades most buildings past parapets, flashings, windows, even brick cladding itself.

The Grenfell Tower fire was, in part, brought about by cladding added to an existing building. Not only was the new insulation highly flammable, but so, too, was the exterior cladding panel itself. Plus, they didn't fire block very well, so the whole installation acted as a massive chimney drawing new oxygen to the fire as it burned.

The fine article is missing any detail drawings whatsoever, but I'd say this idea is as new as a 1970's This Old House episode. Talk to an architect that understands building science and you might learn more about solutions that will help you in your specific climate. For example, here in North Carolina, our problem is humidity, not thermal control. Air leakage (and thereby, vapor) is arguably 10x more contributing to energy costs, indoor air quality (mold, pollen, insects, etc.), and comfort.

Comment Amazon their biggest competitor (Score 1) 56

Ages ago, Staples, Office Depot, and Office Max were the three corners of retail office supplies. Then the two "Offices" merged, and online retail took over. I'm happy for all the brick and mortars to conglomerate just to provide competition, although in my metro we can get popular ink jet cartridges delivered in 2 hours. Frankly, I keep hoping Walmart or Target will give Amazon some heat, but now I think even they are too late.

Kicking one off a platform for disrespectful, antagonizing, domineering, bullying behavior is not censorship.

Decorum and human respect, even with those we deeply disagree with, is the basis for civilized society. Many years ago, "debate" mean exactly that.

99% of the social media and "news" I read has traded civility for "free expression" where I have no desire to spend time even with people who's philosophical, political, or practical opinions I may even agree with.

Good for Parler, until it also becomes an echo chamber.

Comment Why upgrade? (Score 1) 18

To device makers: I'm looking for groundbreaking or earth shattering at this point. Small upgrades aren't worth it. I'm not spending money unless my device dies. I want new stuff like sub-inch accurate LIDAR, lasers, replaceable batteries, memory slots, astrophotography tracking, infrared cameras, replaceable lenses, pop-out tripods, etc.

Otherwise, why upgrade? 5G is going to be years before it is available in most of the country. I'm not in a huge metropolis, so likely there's little benefit here for ages. My old (LG V35) hardware still works fine, has a headphone jack, has a bright 6" screen, all-day battery life (still), multiple cameras, and is fast enough (I don't game on it). It properly connects with several USB devices I own (IR camera, drone, DSLR) and makes calls over wifi. I hate LG's overlay and they never upgrade the OS, but you never fix that.

We have several generations of ChromeCast devices. Frankly, last year's v4 doesn't work much better than our v1: both loose connectivity regularly from a WiFi antenna 8' away.

The only benefits I see in upgrades are for you. In exchange for paying a huge amount for a phone, I get having to buy expensive new versions of the same old accessories, device lock-in, store lock-in, and DRM.

Seriously, I'm no longer buying because I want to, now it's just because I have to. So I'm not buying anything new until you impress me again.

Comment LG, too? (Score 1) 32

I've got an LG phone on Google Fi, which means I'll never see it. I don't know why LG has to plaster so much customization over Android because their settings system replacement is horrible and it takes them forever to update. Last LG phone I buy, that's for sure.

For video editing, see Shotcut http://shotcut.org/.

I've been using it a few years and the stability has improved considerably. Development continues at a good pace with regular updates. As you'd expect for FSOS, the back end is pretty sophisticated, with lots of codecs and advanced capabilities. But some users/developers have recently introduced animated titles which are surprisingly powerful if you know HTML/CSS.

Free competitors also for Linux/Mac/Windows include Olive, Open Shot, and Kdenlive.
