Submission + - YouTube Crushes Mobile Phone Service Competitor

Nom du Keyboard writes: The mighty YouTube (nee Google) has blocked TinyTube from providing YouTube videos transcoded to fit, and be streamed to, cell phone users. Coincindentally, they also signed a distribution deal, no doubt for excellent money, with Verizon in the same timeframe. So has YouTube forgotten who supplies, and more importantly owns, many of those videos? Or did they just get permission from every one of their users to do this in their name? More details here.

Journal Journal: Travelling Tech + World Of Warcraft = BAN

My buddy for many years received bad news today. His World of Warcraft account, with multiple level 60 characters, is banned. Why? They cite logs that show logins from multiple IP's all over the place in the last few months. The kicker: they ban it just before the expansion, but release the ban on opening day. He buys, installs, and activates BC. He logs in for a few hours, and then gets kicked out. Email arrives: they have re-reviewed and decided the ban is valid, after he spent his $40 on the

Submission + - Extended Warranty Nightmare

Demanche writes: "This story on Digg seems to be causing quite the stir with consumers of high end electorics, as BestBuy has created yet another extended warranty nightmare. Consumer Reports recommend against these warranties, and this is just more proof of their stance. The Latimes agrees. What do you think? Do you purchase store warranties?"

Submission + - AMS CERTIFIED WEATHERMAN STRIKES BACK

lessthan0 writes: "I have been in operational meteorology since 1978, and I know dozens and dozens of broadcast meteorologists all over the country. Our big job: look at a large volume of raw data and come up with a public weather forecast for the next seven days. I do not know of a single TV meteorologist who buys into the man-made global warming hype. I know there must be a few out there, but I can't find them."

Submission + - moral duty of becoming involved in security

Joep Gommers writes: "Security went from a game that involved interested, scolars, hobbyists, politics activists, professionals, companies and even philosophers to business. And since business is all about the Benjamin's, the industry became shallow in solutions and aggressive in protecting it's image (something Micheal Lynn knows all about). Education, industry, commerce and science, no part life will be unaffected by the advancement of technology and it's influence on the quality of our lives. How will the world change by this society full of embedded intelligence? Some technologies will be used to improve the human condition, others just for a human's condition ($). The quality of life will be become depend on these technologies. The security complex will play an enormous part in these advanced. The business of minimizing risk will include ensuring quality of life. Not just around personal security, but around the continuity of life and integrity of truth. A first glance in what needs to change and what is coming our way, here."

Submission + - How To Destroy Old Backup Tapes?

DotNM writes: "I've been tasked with destroying two medium-sized boxes full of tapes. I'm looking to find the most creative method of doing this en masse without me or my employer spending any money for anything to do it. I've thought about running over them with my car, but it's too cold outside (winter) to do that."

The Institute of Zoology (IOZ) part of London Zoo(ZSL)has a new project to increase funding for animal conservation. The idea is to target money to species that have few close relatives (described as EDGE species, Evolutionary Distinct and Globally Endangered).

Having an automatic metric means that the animals are not chosen by their fluffiness or big-cute-eyedness. The website allows people to give money to a specific species conservation, as well as sponsor in a more general way.

The effort has garnered a fair amount of attention in the UK press, I thought the /. crowd would like it. eg http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/sci/tech/6263331.stm

EDGE species have few close relatives and are extremely distinct in the way they look, live and behave. These unique species are also on the verge of extinction, and if they disappear there will be nothing like them left on the planet.

Some EDGE species, such as elephants and pandas are
well known, but others, such as the Yangtze river dolphin
(the world's rarest cetacean), the bumblebee bat (the smallest mammal on earth) and the egg-laying long-beaked echidnas, remain poorly understood.

Submission + - What dual screen resolution do you use?

Esc7 writes: So after my recent computer upgrade I now have one of those fancy pants dual head videocards. Its time to chuck that 1024x768 CRT and get with the freaking times. So I ask you slashdotters: What size/resolutions/aspect ratio do you dual screen guys use? I'm leaning right now towards dual 1280x1024, mostly because my computer can pump one of those at full detail for most of my games, which is important to me. But I'd very much like to hear all your views on it.
