The Trap Set By the FBI For Half Life 2 Hacker 637

eldavojohn writes "You might remember the tiny news that Half Life 2 source code was leaked in 2003 ... it is the 6th most visited Slashdot story with over one kilocomment. Well, did anything happen to the source of the leak, the German hacker Axel 'Ago' Gembe? Wired is reporting he was offered a job interview so that Valve could get him into the US and bag him for charges. It's not the first time the FBI tried this trick: 'The same Seattle FBI office had successfully used an identical gambit in 2001, when they created a fake startup company called Invita, and lured two known Russian hackers to the US for a job interview, where they were arrested.'"

In the news this week:

The US government could be entering a bottomless pit of bailouts if it starts propping up failing companies outside the financial sector: (Hoorah for corporate welfare! Glad we're propping up our biggest, most irresponsible and short-sighted companies for another few months!)

Eight-Armed Animal Preceded Dinosaurs 211

Garimelda writes "Scientists have discovered what they believe is an eight-armed creature which colonized a large section of the world's oceans over 300 million years before the first dinosaurs emerged."

Indeed. I would hope it wouldn't be lost on these generations of black youth that it was predominantly *white* people who voted for him. Every black person in the country could have voted for him and he still wouldn't have won if racism and oppression was as rampant as many people claim.

Racial healing? Reality check? The removal of an excuse? All of those things, I'd hope.

Why is it that we need to either like him and think he's a "MASSIVE step forward," or we're racist and should die in a fire? Because of his skin color we can't have ideological differences?

Sounds like you're the racist to me, friend. I saw past his skin color and disliked him for his politics and policies.

Tell you what? Why don't we create an IRS account for "voluntary taxes," and all you guys with extra money to throw around can send in your checks. Hell, we'll even make it tax deductible! Whether or not you ever write that first check, or less likely, the second, please stop volunteering the rest of us just because because of your misplaced altruism.

You know, the snark has got to stop. It sounds witty, but there's nothing behind it and it still manages to pass for insightful commentary.

The fact is that people go to work to make money. They aren't going to quit or not work in government because they want smaller government. Why? Because they've got to work somewhere, and if there's a gov't position open, someone's going to take it anyway. Refusing to take it on principle only hurts the prospective employee, and does NOTHING to constrain the size of government.

What needs to happen is the strategic elimination of high-level groups and programs. That absolutely cannot be done by Joe the IT Worker or Sally the Secretary, and their decision to take that paycheck while its available is totally reasonable.

Free Games As a Solution To Game Piracy 806

christ, jesus H writes "PC gaming may not be dying, but it is in a state of flux. We're seeing developers and publishers blaming piracy for all the ills of PC gaming, but attempts to rein in pirates with the help of DRM only annoys and mobilizes the legitimate customers of your games. The solution? According to David Perry of Shiny Games, PC games are going to be free." (And if anyone has a favorite replacement term for "piracy," in the context of electronic copyright violation, please suggest it below.)

Metallica May Follow In Footsteps of Radiohead, NIN 673

fireheadca writes "Metallica, once strongly opposed to file-sharing, has hinted at going 'free' in the style of NIN and Radiohead. Having heard success stories about releasing music online, Metallica has decided it wants a piece of the action. Radiohead, as a pioneer of online 'pay what you want' music, has shown the world it is possible to profit by releasing music online, but would not post those profits. NIN, on the other hand, has reported at least $1.6 million in revenue. In hindsight, many people remember Metallica as the band that helped shutdown Napster. I purchased the NIN album, after many years of free downloads of the NIN collection, to help support the band. Would you buy a Metallica online album despite their former views?"

Microsoft Loses Appeal of "Vista-Capable" Lawsuit 236

bfwebster writes "Microsoft has lost its appeal to remove class-action status for the 'Vista Capable' lawsuit that has already resulted in some embarrassing internal e-mails being released publicly. As Computerworld reports, in its appeal to the US Ninth Circuit Court, Microsoft argued (among other things) that 'continuing the lawsuit might mean new disclosures of insider e-mails, which could "jeopardize Microsoft's goodwill" and "disrupt Microsoft's relationships with its business partners."' Given what's been released so far (158-page PDF), not to mention Microsoft's history of rather frank internal e-mails, that's probably putting it mildly. There could be some interesting reading ahead."
