Actually they're not even dolls, since they're bolted to plates. They're sculptures that look like robots. One might even go as far as saying they're not even that - since these sculptures fulfill no purpose or explain nothing insofar as they are aesthetic. I believe they were. The metadata here is what they wanted, metadata that is generated automatically. Therefore the data isn't yours or mine, its Verizon's. All they needed was a court order saying that that metadata was necessary for the ongoing investigation into acts of terrorism, and bam, you have probable cause. Its not a fishing expedition, because they are asking for a specific item from Verizon. The only part that worries me about this is how they'be gamed the system to get authorization to do it. But I believe their actions are legal.
