First, this is an incredibly evil idea. Why would we dedicate any more time and money to these people? When does inventing new forms of torture tax society more than the criminals?

Second, a good gut check for the consideration of new tools for the government is this: "How will this be abused?" I think the implications here speak for themselves.

Finally, What gives you the right to inflict these kinds of hypothetical punishment? When have you become worse than the criminal that you're punishing? This post is ethically disgusting.

I've found the only way to get 'good' science articles is via direct press release. And most scientists, engineers etc. heave a big sigh, throw their hands up and say: "well, they're not gonna fucking get it anyway, so why bother." I know I do.

Sometimes I pretend to be a more stereotypically introverted engineer than I am to avoid stupid conversations that revolve around sensationalized 'news' like this.

Can we do ? Yep. Will people get hurt? Yep, probably. Is it worth it? Yeah, maybe.

That is true. But the oft quoted 'You can have any color you want, as long as its black' was in response to the fact that it really was all that was available to the assembly line vehicle. As far as this being an example for companies that couldn't adapt, Ford did eventually come around to the 'customer is always right' mentality because of the competition with GM as stated above.
