Yup, it was easy to find how the Time Life introductory offer works. You get a few cheap, and they'll send more CDs/DVDs which you either buy or return, with you having agreed to buy more at the regular price. The Book of the Month works similarly and terms are easy to find, although not splattered across the pretty front page.

That diffuse light source on the left is the Earth. The nose has bright spots where you'd expect reflections of the earthlight. The port engine is most bright where reflection off the open door concentrates light from the Earth's limb off to the left -- probably mostly clouds reflecting light back toward the Sun.

Submission + - MMO to be reset after 1 year of paid Subscription (sigames.com)

Grimmster writes: Football Manager Live is the online version of top selling Football Manager series of games. According to the developers, it is currently struggling with a smaller than expected number of players brought about by the company's initial strategy of opening lots of gameworlds. There are currently 34 gameworlds, but each one is about 30% full.
The company has therefore decided to wipe out everyone's team. All the progress they have made since November 08 will be gone. Team, Stadium and Money.Reset everyone to scratch. The plan is to then move them to 1 of 8 new worlds.
As you can expect the current fanbase has been quite equivocal in their disgust, especially since the game was promoted to be played in the long term.
Should an MMO be reset after 1 year of paid subscription ?

How would you feel If your level 80 "WoW" character was reset to level 1 and all your gear deleted ?
How would you feel if your "Eve" ship was destroyed and yourself podded ?

Submission + - China plans to launch second lunar orbiter in 2010 (spacefellowship.com)

Matt_dk writes: China will launch its second lunar probe, Chang'e-2, in October 2010, and its first lunar rover before 2013, national media reported on Friday, citing a top space scientist. According to Ye Peijian, chief designer of the nation's first moon probe, the new lunar orbiter will feature "a charge-coupled device (CCD) camera on board, which has a much higher resolution than the camera on China's first lunar probe." "It will orbit 100 km closer to the moon [than the first probe] and will be equipped with better facilities. We expect to acquire more scientific data about the moon with increased accuracy," China daily quoted Ye Peijian as saying.

Submission + - Senators call for transparency in copyright treaty (goodgearguide.com.au)

angry tapir writes: "Two U.S. senators have asked President Barack Obama's administration to allow the public to review and comment on a controversial international copyright treaty being negotiated largely in secret. The public has a right to know what's being negotiated in the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement (ACTA), Senators Sherrod Brown, an Ohio Democrat, and Bernard Sanders, a Vermont Independent, argue in the letter."

Submission + - Solar-Powered Plane Makes Runway Debut (inhabitat.com)

MikeChino writes: The much-hyped Solar Impulse airplane just completed its first runway test, paving the way for a 20 to 25 day trip around the world next year. Conceived by Bertrand Piccard, the single-pilot plane successfully used its four solar powered motors to taxi around the runway. If all goes according to plan the plane will be able to fly day and night without fuel, signaling a bright future for solar powered flight.
