Submission + - ReactOS 0.4.1 Released with lots of improvements (reactos.org)

jeditobe writes: The ReactOS team is proud to announce the release of version 0.4.1 a mere three months after the release of 0.4.0. The team has long desired an increased release tempo and the hope is that this will be the first of many of faster iterations.

In this release you will find:
Activation Context — A fix that came in just a tad too late for 0.4.0, this resolved a problem in the loader that prevented applications depending on various versions of the MSVCRT library from working properly.
New version of UniATA driver.
BTRFS support — Initial read and write support introduced via importing of the WinBtrfs driver.
Shell — General usability improvements such as properly rendering icons and improved folder views.
USB — A variety of fixes that should make plugging in USB devices slightly less crashy.
Virtual machine shared folders — ReactOS now properly supports the shared folders of virtual machines like VirtualBox and VMware Player via network places.

Submission + - Release of ReactOS 0.4 brings open source Windows closer to reality (techrepublic.com)

jeditobe writes: What's new in ReactOS 0.4?
The release of ReactOS 0.4 brings improved file system support, including native, out-of-the-box support for ext2, ext3, and ext4, as well as read-only support for NTFS.

Additionally, the bundled version of UniATA was updated to add better support for SATA and PATA devices. Support was generally improved for third-party device drivers, making it substantially easier to install and use real hardware, as opposed to just virtual machines like VirtualBox.

The internal WINE library was updated to improve support for Win32 programs. Support for Python 2.7 was added, making it possible to use python scripts in ReactOS. A substantial number of visual changes were added, with a vastly improved shell and file explorer, newer icons throughout ReactOS, improved support for fonts, and customizable visual themes.

Even with these improvements, ReactOS 0.4 is still generally considered alpha-level software, though Alexander Rechitskiy, the innovation manager for ReactOS, notes that 0.4.1 may be almost beta-level software.

Submission + - ReactOS got website redisign and 0.4 version realeased (reactos.org)

Nearly ten years ago the ReactOS Project released version 0.3.0. Today we are proud to announce the formal release of version 0.4.0. A great deal of work has gone into making this release happen and as we look back it is remarkable to consider how far the project has come since that release a decade ago. This release is both a celebration of and a testament to everything that the ReactOS team and community has achieved together. Thank you to all of you for having stood by the project for this long and we hope rewarding journey.

Submission + - Finnaly, ReactOS as a second OS in Russian government's software freedom effort (reactos.org)

jeditobe writes: The Russian Federation along with the BRICS nations are pursuing measures to rid vendor lock-in of strategically important software (http://minsvyaz.ru/en/events/33237/) and substitute such software with free/open software (http://minsvyaz.ru/en/events/32967/).

As such an initiative would provide considerable benefits beyond that of any singular agenda, Aleksey Bragin decided to take part in that on behalf of ReactOS Foundation. Since October 2014 he has been a member of the Operating Systems workgroup formed by the Ministry of Telecom and Mass Communications (so-called "IT Ministry") and actively participating in its discussions.

The IT Ministry issued a request for proposals this April to find and help develop independent technologies in different categories (mobile, desktop, server operating systems, databases, office software, virtualization and cloud infrastructure). The ReactOS Foundation submitted two projects: ReactOS desktop operating system and RosServer — ReactOS-based server operating system.

After evaluations, various meetings and Aleksey's presentation to the CIO of several large Russian companies the results were published last week (http://minsvyaz.ru/ru/documents/4662/ — in Russian only) with ReactOS-based projects receiving second place in the OS category, with first place taken by ROSA Lab and ALT Linux consortium.

The selection process was pretty tough, full of meetings, filters, and time-pressure, but that was worth the effort. The skills and work of the ReactOS team made the whole process easier. Many other awesome projects couldn't make it in this and other categories, but the ReactOS Foundation is willing to help them by opening as many collaboration agreements as possible in order to create nice synergies.

We knew, when we submitted the two ReactOS-based projects, how difficult it would be to get a place among the selected projects, and we're very proud to announce this achievement as a sort of reward for the ReactOS Community, and to all the Developers and Testers who have contributed to making ReactOS what it is now: The best open source Windows alternative up to date.

We do not have details about what happens after these evaluations, but rest assured, we will keep you informed of any updates. Stay tuned!

Submission + - ReactOS gets a Youtube Channel (reactos.org)

Pi_User5 writes: ReactOS is proud to announce the new YouTube ReactOS Community Channel!

It's main goal is to share all of the videos of ReactOS in one main spot. This way, the entire ReactOS community and the world will be able to see the progress of ReactOS and what it can do. It can also be used as PR to the world.

If you are a member of the ReactOS Community and you're reading it and want to help, contact ReactOS and found out how. For non-member, please subscribe and watch our videos!

Thank you!
