Comment I talk to ChatGPT and Bard for hours - not lonely. (Score 3, Insightful) 72

I've spoken at length with ChatGPT about Quantum Mechanics, the nature of Electricity, all kinds of things. I've used both ChatGPT and Bard to help me solve configuration problems with Linux and Windows. In many ways they are just like a person there helping me. They do make mistakes, but both are open to suggestion that they made a mistake and they re-figure the problem and try different options. I've seen a lot of people say, "they get things wrong, and act dismissive towards these first ever competent chat bots. I feel that I have already gotten several college classes worth of knowledge I'm interested in, and many hours worth of advice on problems with my several computers at home. Talking with ChatGPT and Bard is ... FAR better than attempting to cruise forums and find information. I get so tired in forums trying to sift through people's poor writing, and their common attempts to out clever each other. I ask a question of the bots and they do their best, by default, to answer questions, with no human ego BS. That is priceless.

Yes, behavior might be deterministic, but some people still have the ability to chose. Some have the ability to avoid harming a bunch of people, but that is still part of their deterministic path. We still need to deal with people who for whatever reason cannot avoid harming others. Functionally, it does not matter whether or not people are put away because we believe they chose to harm others, or that they cannot help themselves. At some level, some people still need to be put away. But questioning the reward/punishment style of justice could be good.

The adoption rate of Windows 11 is slightly more than Windows 8, at 20% after 2 years, and less than Windows Vista at 25% at 2 years. This operating system is dead. It's adoption rate is among the worst adoption rates of all windows operating systems except for 1 and 2 and possibly 3.0. It has a very confusing and poorly thought out user interface. It has features that have been removed from Windows 10 that many people do like. The TPM 2.0 requirement can be bypassed. Microsoft has saw fit to make it more difficult for the user to choose their own default applications, forced them to use the Edge browser with Windows help and Office 365 applications and turned Windows 11 into a giant billboard and add tracking nightmare unless the user knows what to shut off. Of course we can trust that no data will be gathered if people just set data gathering radio buttons to off right? Who knows? So the half a billion number is irrelevant. What matters is the overall adoption rate regarding the claim that Windows 11 is becoming popular or not. It's one of the worst performing Windows operating systems in history in that respect. Let's add this in. Windows 10 usage rates stands at about 71% of all PC users 2 years after Windows 11 came out. I'm a Windows 10 user and it's a fine operating system except now MS is shoving stuff into Windows 10 like, "you must use Edge." Normal users don't know how to defeat it. Windows 11 is a disaster.

Comment I'm in shock over people's resistance to chat bots (Score 1) 40

I hear opinions all the time how chatbots are not useful. chatbots get things wrong, etc. I mainly work with chat GPT 3.5. but I've had extensive discussions with it on quantum mechanics, electromagnetism, how to do different things like configure wine on Linux correctly. if the chat bot gets something wrong I say to it, "appears that you've got this wrong." And then the chatbot reviews its data and will say if I'm correct, "oh yes I see what you're saying here," and will tell me why I'm correct generally. does it get things wrong? absolutely. but people are letting their Tesla self-drive themselves while they're complaining about how chatbots don't get anything right and they're full of shit. for the first time in history we're able to interact with a computer on a conversational level. I've learned more in the last year with chat GPT on certain issues than I've learned in many years without it. And when researching computer issues I feel like I have a person sitting there helping me through issues. The people who are complaining about chat bots apparently, to me, do not actually use it very much. they'll go on and say, "well I asked it a question and it got it wrong." they don't tell the chatbot about what it got it wrong, and then try to interact with it and tell the chatbot how it got it wrong. unlike most humans chatbots are willing to be wrong. people just make a judgment call and move on apparently. because they're not having the same experience I am having for damn sure. being able to interact with the data on chatGPT on a conversational level is one of the best things that has ever happened to me. also searching for ways to solve problems in Linux or Windows is so much better than attempting to search on Google which is littered with many ads. And then you get into a forum and half of the people are usually trying to out clever each other to death. or they aren't giving complete descriptions of how to solve problems so you have to concatenate a bunch of different responses from all over the place. people are acting like AI is not pervasive in industries and that these chat bots are mere toys and that is bullshit.

Comment Information Theory is immutable and necessary. (Score 1) 170

Information Theory stands in Physics alongside the theories of Newton, Einstein, and Quantum Mechanics (QM). There is no dividing line between the - necessity of Information Theory and other proven theories in Physics. We should remember that even Einstein did not accept, in certain terms, Entanglement in Quantum Mechanics. Einstein was wrong about some specific aspects of QM. This has been shown unequivocally in the real world tests performed using the Bell-Clauser-Horne-Shimony-Holt (CSHS) inequalities. However, we need to keep in mind that Einstein was one of the fathers of Quantum Theory, and one of the most brilliant scientists ever. If there can be a definitive test developed, for what the genetics paper proposes applied to the idea of the Simulation Hypothesis, and the test results are positive, and defensible, then the results wound stand upon confirmation. The fact that we would find this possibility fanciful or Sci-Fi-like in the case of The Simulation Hypothesis, to the degree that it could be shown to be factual, then our personal reservations would be irrelevant, scientifically. For those who like sports, if we develop a test, and is proves positive, then it's a slam dunk. 2 points is 2 points.
