Dell's markup is huge, but the time and effort you'll be putting in will justify the cost along with failure rates. I would just look for a cheaper vendor. Also, you may not be able to legally go the route your looking at. Many government entities have to put out RFPs before making large purchases.

I'm a bit older and I always remember having an account mostly to track how much to charge my parents. The school district I work for passes out cards right before lunch with a barcode to scan to track payment. I suspect that this system has little to do with watching or more to do with money. Tracking food is probably the BS that the school district gave to the government to get them to shell out the cash for a new system.

Most places don't install cameras to prevent bad behavior or even to catch it in the act. The real point of most video surveillance is to tell that bimbo that said he/she fell in isle 3 he/she is full of it. I work at a place with about 200 cameras in about 15 buildings. No one actively watches them, we just get request for video of a location at certain time and burn it to a CD.

Don't even have to do the root certificate. If the filter solution is set inline, it can intercept it just fine. really, no point in blocking or filter search results anyway, search results don't pose much of a risk, the user has to click on a link at some point that is either going to be filter or not filtered. Personally, I just plug my EVO into my computer at work (a school).

Submission + - Sheldon Cooper of Big Bang Theory Uses Ubuntu

Stephenmg writes: I was shocked to see a television series mention linux, even more so for it to be Ubuntu. "The Big Bang Theory starring a group of four friends, all of whom have unusual habits has been a hit with the student and the geek culture." Sheldon Cooper's favorite linux distro is Ubuntu.

Submission + - Firefox Is Lagging Behind, Firefox Co-Founder says (techcrunch.com)

sopssa writes: "Firefox's Co-Founder Blake Ross is skeptical about the future of Firefox. He says that "the Mozilla Organization has gradually reverted back to its old ways of being too timid, passive and consensus-driven to release breakthrough products quickly." Within the past year Chrome has been steadily increasing its marketshare along with the other WebKit based browsers like Safari. Meanwhile Mozilla's CEO says that while it's more competitive than ever, they're looking forward to their mobile version of Firefox. "Clearly, both are annoyed at what has happened to their former renegade web browser. — But, by many accounts, Firefox is no longer considered to be the light, open alternative it once was.""

Submission + - Rogue McAfee update strikes police, hospitals

Stephenmg writes: A detection update from McAfee (DAT 5958) falsely labelled the svchost.exe as the Wecorl-A virus, sending a core Windows system file into quarantine in the process. Infected computers became inoperable and went into a continuous reboot cycle. Reported victims include Kansas City Police Department and and the University of Kansas Hospital and about a third of the hospitals in Rhode Island. PCs also went haywire at Intel. Personally, I think it was correct.

A big reason there's no free market with ISPs is because of government regulation. If I wanted to start my own ISP and had the money to do it, I would have to go through the trouble of getting franchise agreements with every town I want to customers in.
