Comment Democracy is dying (Score 3) 190

There were always people spreading "crazy lies" and "conspiracy theories". That was never a real problem before. What changed is that now governments, journalists, and even intellectuals are doing the same for "moral" reasons. Because of this, more and more people are losing confidence in any kind of authority.

Censorship won't work. Censorship under an authoritarian regime can slow down the spread of ideas, but it can't stop it. Worse, when people can't speak, they start to use civil disobedience and then violence.

1. Trump chose to ignore North Korea, but there is zero "positive engagement" with that country.
2. Sunny Arab states recognized Israel long before Trump. The only groups that still don't recognize Israel are a few terrorist groups (several of them being backed by Saudi Arabia). As for "mutual assistance", that's utter bullshit. There is some cooperation between some Arab countries and Israel, but that was the case before Trump. If anything, Trump deteriorated the relations between Arab countries and Israel because of his decision regarding Jerusalem.
3. The assassination of Soleimani was a act of war. The goal was to provoke Iran into retaliating, forcing European countries to support war against Iran. Iran kind of retaliated, but European countries didn't let themselves get into a war and Trump couldn't have his war, despite his best efforts.
4. Although relations with Mexico are getting a bit better, it was Trump who fucked up those relations.
5. When India decided to buy S400 from Russia, the US started threats against India. The result is that relations with India are now worse than before.

I live in Canada and I don't intend to ever go to China. Also, Canada does not have a treaty of extradition with China. This means the Chinese government can't do anything against me and I absolutely don't care if the Chinese government can look into my life.

On the other hand, not only Canada has a treaty of extradition with the US, but it is a member of the Five Eyes alliance. Also, American companies have to give access to their data to the American government by law.

So between a product from a Chinese company and a product from an American company, which one do you think I'll buy?

Japan was willing to negotiate the end of the war before Hiroshima, but the US wanted Japan to surrender without conditions. Americans didn't want to end the war, they wanted to win it and to take control of Japan. That's why the US committed these crimes against humanity.

I'm not sure if you're trying to be a jerk or if you really don't get it. Just in case, "burning off" the atmosphere meant that the hydrogen would fuse into helium, it didn't mean the atmosphere would magically disappear. Also, even if the atmosphere would magically disappear, matter can still be released into "space".

As for your comment about "insulting people" and "making friends"... stop being a hypocrite.

Comment Re:X will die (Score 0) 253

In Canada (where I live), life expectancy is 82.25 years. I don't have the average age of people who died, but here are the stats by age group as of August 27 :

71.4 % of people who died were 80 years old or older.
18.2% were between 70 and 79.
7.2% were between 60 and 69.
2.3% were between 50 and 59.
0.6% were between 40 and 49.

More importantly, out of a population of 37.59 million, the total number of deaths was 9,022, that is 0.024% of the population.

Obviously, even if it stays forever, Covid-19 will have no meaningful impact on life expectancy. The danger of the pandemic was completely blown out of proportion. Lockdowns and mandatory masks are a completely irrational response.

Covid-19 or not, 100% of people will die. The question is only when they die.

We'll see in a few months if the people who died of Covid-19 were people in good health or people who were already near death. Since the majority of people who died were in nursing homes, my guess is we'll see a dip in mortality during the next few months equivalent to the surplus we saw during the previous months.

Comment Intellivision Amico (Score 1) 126

I'm a computer gamer since my Commodore 128. The only exceptions were a Sega Saturn that I bought when I was in the military (having a gaming PC was not possible) and an X-Box 360 that I bought to play Dance Central during parties (the only other game that I bought for the 360 was Virtua Fighter 5, but I didn't play it because I hate gamepads).

Right now, the only console that looks interesting to me is the Intellivision Amico. I'm not interested much with the "retro" games for the console, but I'm certainly interested in the idea of couch co-op with the whole family. The Amico is the first console I'm truly interested in since the Colecovision.

Comment Re:China playing right into Trump's hands (Score 1) 111

It's Trump who is playing into the hand of Xi Jinping.

China wants to become the next world leader, but this is not possible for now because the Chinese economy is far too dependent on the US. By pushing Trump to sanction China, Chinese companies will be forced to innovate. This will diversify China's economy and allow China to cut its dependence on the US.
