UTF-8 is 8 BITS, not 8 BYTES. The largest per-character encoding of Unicode as far as I know is utf-32, 32 bits or 4 bytes.

When's the last time you saw google get hacked? They run a custom OS built on top of linux. Facebook runs linux on their servers. All of the top supercomputers in the world run linux, 80% of the top 500 run linux. I don't remember the last time anyone ever said a supercomputer was hacked, do you?

If you want to point out these rootkits and exploits, feel free to show me them. I would be amazed that any major exploit for a linux OS would not have been patched quickly.

The only real way of breaking into a linux system that I know of is to have physical access to the computer or to have a bad sysadmin.

I usually either get straight 200-300 kbyte/s (they advertised 3 mbit/s), or I get 20. Depends on the time of day...

I've been with them for several months now. Their Romania datacentre sucks, don't use it. But their US datacentres are very nice. I have a vps for $20/month with 1gb of ram, 2gb burstable; 2ghz single-core CPU, burstable to more cores; 40gb HDD, 1tb transfer. I usually get around 8 megabytes per second through their network and the Dallas datacentre has yet to go below what it promises. I run a minecraft server, IRC server, and several other things on my vps 24/7.

I have two 20gb HDDs in my old computer that are at least 10 years old. :p
