Submission + - Scientists Create A Tractor Beam On Water (redorbit.com)

GlowingCat writes: Physicists at The Australian National University (ANU) have created a tractor beam on water, providing a radical new technique that could confine oil spills, manipulate floating objects or explain rips at the beach. The team, led by Dr Horst Punzmann, discovered they can control water flow patterns with simple wave generators, enabling them to move floating objects at will.

Submission + - Russia to be disconnected from the Internet? (pravda.ru) 2

GlowingCat writes: The issue of security of the Russian segment of the Internet will be a topic for discussion at the meeting of the Russian Security Council, with the participation of President Vladimir Putin and several high-ranking officials. The meeting will take place next week. According to various reports, the officials will make a number of decisions regulating the use of the Internet in Russia, providing for the ability to cut the Russian Internet, known as Runet, from the outside world, in case of emergency.

Submission + - Toward a Quantum Theory of Gravity? (huffingtonpost.com)

GlowingCat writes: One of the main problems in attempting to calculate gravitational interactions with gravitons has been that the calculations produced unphysical infinities at almost every step. Bern and colleagues, however, managed to enormously simplify the calculations by showing that, at least in some cases, gravitons can be replaced by two copies of gluons — the carriers of the strong nuclear force. If this double-copy-of-gluons relationship holds in general, this clue could potentially lead to a dramatic breakthrough in the search for a quantum theory of gravity.

Submission + - Extending human vision range into near-infrared with Vitamin A

asvravi writes: A crowd-funded experiment on experiment.com seeks to extend the color range of human vision into near infra-red by only manipulating the amounts of vitamin A1 and A2 in the diet of subjects.
https://experiment.com/project...
It has now reported initial success with human eye response at 950nm as compared to 850nm before the diet modifications. https://experiment.com/u/aAcR2...

Submission + - MenuetOS 0.99.26 released

GlowingCat writes: MenuetOS, 64bit assembly written OS for x86, was recently released.
Additions include USB support ranging from webcam and printer to
digital TV-tuner. Menuet has realtime transparency for GUI, which
is calculated in the main CPU, so no special compatibility with graphics
cards is needed. 0.99.26 inludes also support for SMP and mathematical
functions, like FFT.
