Woz Is First In Line For iPhone 4S 287

An anonymous reader writes "Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak is already camped out in front of an Apple store for the new iPhone 4S. From the article: 'Woz and his trusty Segway showed up at his local Apple store in Los Gatos Thursday and said he will stay there overnight. He added he already has two phones coming to his house, but doesn't mind hanging out for one more for his wife.'"

Scientists Developed Artificial Structures That Can Self-Replicate 127

First time accepted submitter mphall21 writes "New York University scientists have developed artificial structures that can self-replicate, a process that has the potential to yield new types of materials. In the natural world, self-replication is ubiquitous in all living entities, but artificial self-replication has been elusive. The new discovery is the first steps toward a general process for self-replication of a wide variety of arbitrarily designed seeds."

Apple's Siri As Revolutionary As the Mac? 692

hype7 writes "The Harvard Business Review is running an article on Siri, the speech recognition technology inside the new iPhone. They make the case that Siri's use of artificial intelligence and speech recognition is going to change the way we interact with machines. From the article: 'The advantage of using speech over other interaction paradigms is that we have honed its use over thousands of years. It is entirely natural for us to talk to one another. Talking is one of the first things we learn how to do as children. It's second nature for us to ask a colleague or a friend a question and for them to answer the same way. Being able to talk to a phone like it's a personal assistant is something that people are going to get very used to, very quickly. It's a much more natural approach than using a mouse on a desktop. And I highly doubt the impact is going to stop at phones.'"

CyanogenMod Ports Android To HP TouchPad 86

yesakmac joins the teeming hordes of successful Slashdot submitters, with this excerpt from PC World that says the frenzied effort to port Android to HP's discontinued TouchPad has actually succeeded: "CyanogenMod also released a 'lower your expectations edition' release guide to let you know exactly what is working (or not) under the hood. Modders will be happy to know that basically all the TouchPad's guts are recognized. It supports dual-booting and fake SD cards in case you need to restore the TouchPad. What does not work, though, is the camera, which can only be used for video chat. Power efficiency is still an issue, too. As for the final build, CyanogenMod says they won't be giving a hard date, and that it will be ready when it is ready."

Submission + - Useless AVG Antivius for Windows Phone Stealing Yo (thecompiler.org)

gzomartin writes: Earlier in the week AVG Antivirus released an antivirus application called AVG Mobilation for Windows phones on the marketplace. The problem is that there are no viruses for Windows phones yet and second 3rd party applications can't actually access system files or applications on the phone.

Submission + - Minecraft Beta 1.8 Prerelease leaked. (reddit.com)

isCreeper($('Ssss')) writes: It sounds like Minecraft 1.8 was leaked on 4chan's /v/ board. One of the pre-release test groups leaked a link to assets.minecraft.net leading to both the server and client jar files. Notch and jeb then made it clear that anyone could use it, as long as they had already paid (obviously).
What I don't understand is how you can have a "prerelease" leak, for a game that's still in beta...

Submission + - Students boycott graduation, protest corruption (thehindu.com)

decora writes: "Tech students at one of the top universities in India, the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur, are boycotting their own graduation to show solidarity with Anna Hazare, who is undergoing a hunger strike to support his version of a tough anti-corruption law. One civil engineering student, Sashi Singh, is even refusing to accept his degree."

Submission + - Black Scientists Have Lower Odds of Winning Grants (sciencemag.org) 1

sciencehabit writes: A study published today in Science may shed new light on why African American scientists are so rare in biomedical research—and raises troubling questions about possible bias during grant reviews conducted by the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH). The in-depth analysis of NIH grant data finds that black Ph.D. scientists—and not other minorities—were far less likely to receive NIH funding for a research idea than a white scientist from a similar institution with the same research record. The gap was large: A black scientist's chance of winning NIH funding was 10 percentage points lower than that of a white scientist.

Submission + - Why 2011 is the Year of Open Source (crn.com)

deadeyefred writes: While this year marks the 20th anniversary of Linux, its contribution as a model of open-source development is now everywhere: Android, OpenStack, desktops, super computers. While Apple, Google, Microsoft and others are slugging it out over patent rights and proprietary technology, the open source model continues to drive critical innovation everywhere.

Submission + - The Weed Genome (nature.com)

GNUman writes: Maybe soon we'll be able to genetically modify humans so that a specific action (e.g., tapping your nose, pinching your ear) triggers the release of THC directly from your own cells! From the Nature Blog post:
"At last, the field of genomics has something to offer Cheech and Chong. DNA sequencing hit a new high last night with the midnight release of the Cannabis sativa genome. The raw sequence was posted on Amazon’s EC2 public cloud computing service by a young company called Medicinal Genomics, which aims to explore the genomes of therapeutic plants."

Submission + - Former Popemobile Going Up For Auction (gizmag.com)

Zothecula writes: The greater share of the value of any significant collector car is in the provenance — who sat in the seat before you, and experienced the same vehicle, can make a massive difference to the price the car commands. What then of a car that was built for and used by Pope Paul VI? It was subsequently the centre of numerous other ticker tape parades with dozens of dignitaries, most notably the first astronauts to orbit the moon (Apollo 8's Frank Borman, James Lovell and William Anders), the first astronauts to set foot on the moon (Apollo 11's Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin, plus Command Module Pilot Michael Collins) plus Apollo 13's Lovell, Mattingly and Haise and Apollo 15's Scott, Worden and Irwin, President Lyndon LBJ Johnson and VP Hubert Humphrey.
