PerlJedi writes: "Local Area hacker/maker spaces may not be new, but that are gain popularity. I for one love having a cost effective and easy access to the types of tools and equipment that are simply too expensive for hobby makers like me to afford.
"It's hard to differentiate between what Maker Works IS and what Maker Works MEANS. What Maker Works IS is 11,000 square feet full of incredibly cool and expensive machinery catering to four kinds of making: metal, circuits, wood and craft. It works like a gym — a large space packed with expensive equipment that patrons can access with daily, monthly or yearly memberships. ""

I have never met a developer that thought Visual Studio is a great IDE. That's probably for the best, as I would laugh in the face of anyone who did.

And jeez, someone has the balls to have consistent opinions!

This statement doesn't even make sense... are you saying that you have consistent opinions because you think everything Microsoft does is just the best? Clearly you can't mean to say that Microsoft has consistent opinions...

Journal Journal: Meditations on Time, Spammers, Trolls and Fame

As I've been working this week to build a supplement for our existing hall of fame, I've been making decisions (or guesses) about many things, some the I expected, and some that I didn't... We will be releasing this thing into the wild soon, and some of the decisions I've made may be reversed once we see how readers actually interact with and re-act to it. All of you that are smart/lucky/bored/crazy/unfortunate (you pick the adjective) enough to be reading and following my thoughts are invit

Submission + - Verizon Begins Taking Away Your Remaining Privacy (pcmag.com)

flash2011 writes: Recently Verizon changed its home internet TOS to by default share your location with advertisers. Now Verizon Wireless has also changed its privacy policy to by default share your web browsing history, cell phone location and app usage as well. Whilst there have been a few stories on these changes, internet forums have largely been quiet. Where is the outrage? Or have we just come to accept that ISPs are going to sell our personal information and web browsing habits?

Submission + - Faster-than-Light Neutrino Mystery Likely Solved

Hugh Pickens writes writes: "It's now been three weeks since the extraordinary news that neutrinos travelling between France and Italy had been clocked moving faster than light and more than 80 papers have appeared attempting to debunk or explain the effect. Now Ronald van Elburg at the University of Groningen has made a convincing argument that he has found the error. The OPERA team says it can accurately gauge the instant when the neutrinos are created and the instant they are detected using clocks at each end but the tricky part is keeping the clocks at either end exactly synchronized using GPS satellites, which each broadcast a highly accurate time signal from orbit some 20,000km overhead. But there are two frames of reference: the experiment on the ground and the clocks in orbit. If these are moving relative to each other, then under special relativity "from the perspective of the clock, the detector is moving towards the source and consequently the distance travelled by the particles as observed from the clock is shorter," writes van Elburg. How big is this effect? Van Elburg calculates that it should cause the neutrinos to arrive 32 nanoseconds early but this must be doubled because the same error occurs at each end of the experiment accounting for 64 nanoseconds, almost exactly what the OPERA team observes. "If it stands up, this episode will be laden with irony," according to the Physics arXiv Blog. "Far from breaking Einstein's theory of relatively, the faster-than-light measurement will turn out to be another confirmation of it. ""

Submission + - Ask Slashdot: Linux or Windows for a new computer 13

Kilrah_il writes: I just bought a new computer and I have a small dilemma: Do I install Windows or Linux? On the one hand, I have all my programs for Winows so I already know them and can set up my computer just the way I like it pretty quickly. On the other hand, Linux, and especially Ubuntu, are getting better in terms of usability and it could be nice to check it out. I don't want to dual boot since I want in the end to have a computer that has all I need on 1 OS. Are there any strong arguments in favor of one OS over the other?
Keep in mind that a) I have licenses for all my applications so the cost is not an issue (for now), and b) I prefer practical reasons. "OSS is good and MS is bad" is not a factor for me. Thanks!
