It looks to me like it will bring more context into conversations and save some drudgery while getting you past the "writers block" on communications because you simply don't have time to go dig up all the past conversations about this topic over the last 6 months with the person/company you're trying to respond to.

I'm super stoked and hope I get to start using it soon.

I've said this forever. Also, the total lifecycle impact of additional carts, trucks driving to every house for an extra trip/etc make it very environmentally painful to recycle.

We should recycle aluminum, steel/tin and mayble glass and cardboard from homes.

In reality, if we incinerated household garbage, they could collect the tin and aluminum and the plastics and papers would go to add energy that would spin the turbine.

I truly wish recycling plastics worked, but it really doesn't seem to have a better lifecycle than just using as little as you can and incinerating the rest.
One garbage stop per house each week, done.

I actually think this will work, as they'll likely do this for fleet deals where they're selling/leasing the trucks and providing the charging services along the way (and probably maintenance too). A managed service for the truck that logistic companies can use.

Like most things, I expect the commercial service (this) to be wildly better than the dodgy consumer service (electrify america). Tesla is a standout in that they provide a great charging experience to consumers.

I can see where they may consider adding some consumer services later (electric RV recharging or charging EVs that are towing trailers), but they may also be like the cardlock diesel stations and just refuse to serve consumers.

Your specific point on returns is correct. I used this tool to look back 35 years (to 1987) and said you put $80/month in TODAY's dollars in it monthly. https://dqydj.com/sp-500-perio...

You'd have invested a grand total $24K over 35 years (a Kia) and would have 176K in today's dollars available to you. If you withdrew at 4% a year, you'd have an extra $500/mo for life and probably a bit left over when you die.

I guess, what's your alternative? Should they sit around hoping, or take action? This is merely one (actually one of the easiest) ways to build wealth, even starting from zero. While the sums are modest, I'd a hell of a lot prefer to have $176k plus SS than just SS and no "nextegg". I know lots of people retired well on sums not much more than that. While they continue to live fairly frugally, they're not in grinding poverty.

I hear this, but let's say they pull in 40k as a family and save only 5% of it

That's $2,000/year. If they do that for 35 years at 7%, they would have $317,000 extra in their nestegg. If they managed to pay off a modest house over those years too, they'd be sitting decently on SS+over $1,000 per month they could take out in perpetuity.

I'll also note that due to the saver's tax credit for low income people, they would get 1/2 of that back in their taxes. https://www.irs.gov/retirement...

so. for 1,000/year (~$80/month) they could net $1,000 a MONTH in retirement. I'm not saying it's easy, I'm just saying it takes "trying".

What annual income does someone need to make in your world to put away 10%. Name a number.

Then, reading ahead, I think you'll find that there are indeed a huge number of people living on 10% less than that number.

There are millions of ways to live cheaper or increase income and it's going to depend on what that person values more (are they willing to hustle, learn, etc to earn more, or do they want to settle for a lower standard of living). The great news is, they get to pick. The article said "1/2 of americans". If you refer to the second table here https://www.census.gov/data/ta... you'll see that the bottom 1/2 of households make up to 75k/year. If you want to argue that someone making under 25k can't really invest, I'll go with that. That's 20%. I'm critical of the 30% that make more than that, and can't seem to save ANYTHING.

There will be some seasons of life where it doesn't happen, but it can happen for the VAST majority.

Here's how I know. There is always someone who makes 7% less than you that makes it in your city. So you can too. It's not easy, we've sacrificed a lot, coming from very poor upbringing, to have some decent investments as we hit the back 1/2.
