Agree. Too little, too late.

Cable is on death row, and nothing will save it from the Internet.

I'm waiting for the networks to discover that they can stream their own channel on the Internet from their own servers - and thus have complete controll over commercials, based on the viewer's IP, time zone, and other demographics. Neilson can only dream of the ratings data they could gather. If Facebook can IPO for a gagillion dollars, why can's [your-favorite-channel] make a killing without the cable company as a middle man?

Mod parrent to +Infinity. Navteq is by far the worst GPS/mapping database out there. Even the half-hearted, "croud-sourced" Waze is better.

I frequently use my iPhone's mapping system when I'm in my van with the Navteq system. It's not just the road mistakes & outdated info, it's also the interface. I recently tried to get directions to my town's YMCA. After 10 minutes, the best match I could find was one over 1,000 miles away. 3 seconds with Siri and I had directions.

I am completly convinced that the deveopers of Navteq systems don't actually use it themselves. It's that bad.

Ditto here. Failed the "spouse test". Ugly color, and the brightness swings wildly depending on temperature. I have one in the garage, and every time I go out there I am reminded that I will never buy another CFL bulb. I remain skeptical on LED bulbs.

Put another way, if they were selling a bulb for $60 that gave *free* light for 1 to 18 years, would you buy it? I don't think I would... light bulbs use so little power, and there are other areas with a much greater bang for the buck.

Comment Intelligence is like health (Score 1) 254

I've always thought that intelligence was the result of an optimized system. Sure, any of a thousand genes can decrease intelligence- they decrease optimization. If all of the thousands of genes are set right, you get a system working properly, and hopefully high intelligence.

To look for a single gene that controls intelligence is like looking for the single part that solves performance issues in all computers everywhere.

Put another way, what's the one gene that controlls health? Hey look, a gene that causes cancer if it's mutated. Behold- the health gene!

I thought this was obvious. Gasoline & battery aren't the only ways to make a car go.

Take this factory option Natural Gas Civic for example:

With a little work, there's also Hydrogen, compressed air (for really short ranges), and there's always the totally renewable option of burning wood in steam powered cars. Not ver convienient, but it *is* an option.

Climante Change? Sure, climate is changing. It always has, and always will.

We've had ice ages, we've had warm cycles. The plan is not static.

I see far too many people under the guise of "environmentalist" thinking that the planet's climent at this point in time is the right, correct, and only proper state of the planet.

As long as the solution to the fast "refuel" problem is "just drive your 2nd car", EV's will remain a luxury purchase for the wealthy with guilty eco consciences.

I want a single car to replace my single car. I don't want to have to pay insurance, plates, repairs, maintenance on an extra vehicle. That's saving no money, and not "saving the planet" if that's your thing.

I want an EV because it's: (1) Cool new tech with cool new features, and (2) A lot cheaper per mile*.

* - Unless you factor in battery pack replacement every x years, plus the inevitable per-mile taxes to replace gas tax.
