I'd quit throwing away so many cables if they would quit failing on me all of the time. I've probably thrown away 100 dead USB charging cables. I keep trying different brands hoping to find a reliable one. Even tried those steel armored USB cables. Armor lasted fine, cable inside of it still broke.

Submission + - Hubble Discovery of Other Galaxies Turns 100

Bill Kendrick writes: Edwin Hubble's discovery — thanks to a Cepheid Variable star — that the "Andromeda Nebula" was actually an entire galaxy 2.5 million light years away, happend 100 years ago today. NASA's Astronomy Photo of the Day for today celebrates this with an image of the original photo plate from October 6, 1923. Notice the "N" (for nova) crossed off, and "VAR!" (for variable) next to the star!

The discovery of Cepheids, and the important fact that their brightening and dimming was regular, and could be used to determine a star's intrinsic brightness, was thanks to Henrietta Swan Leavitt about a decade earlier.

David Butler's "How Far Away Is It?" series has an excellent episode on Andromeda on YouTube.

Chrome could easily eliminate a click by converting the drop down list into radio buttons. But really, would that make any difference?

Running a bunch of TV ads would be much more effective at achieving switching. Of course ads cost money. I believe I have seen a DDG TV ad exactly once in my lifetime. Why are Bing and DDG surprised no one is switching? It's not like they are running massive ad campaigns promoting it. As far as I can see they are making close to zero effort at marketing.

Jump to the end of the story. Force Apple to implement the browser choice box. Google saves $10B. Everyone except Apple is happy.

TRIAC dimming is an awful way to dim LEDs. I agree that a DC solution would be optimal. Of course that requires different wiring which isn't going to happen for a long time.

Another option is using smart bulbs and then converting the wall switch to control them via radio instead of phase chopping. That solves the dimming problem but installation is complex because of the need to bind the smartbulb to the switch. At least this can be done with existing wiring.

It might even be possible to use GAN IGBTs to put a 50-60W power supply into a wall box and drive DC LEDs. Of course no one sells DC LED bulbs.

I have A19 LEDs bulbs in lamps which have never died.

What is not working is MR16 12V GU5.3 LEDs in ceiling fixtures with TRIAC dimmers. I have tried dozens of brands of MR16 LEDs. All of them have failed miserably. And yes I always buy dimmable ones. The likely problem here -- CEILING FIXTURES -- they trap the heat.

Landscape lighting is very similar to MR16 -- it is MR11. But in those cases I don't think the LEDs can take the sub-zero freezes. When I swap them out some of them are visibly broken, likely from thermal stress.

1) The long lifetime of LEDs is a lie, all of mine die in under five years. I have some halogens which are twenty years old. I even bought some top of the line $30 LEDs -- still died in under five years.
2) Given that their lifetime is about the same as a halogen and they are four times more expensive, there isn't any real cost savings.
3) The environment impact of manufacturing the LED bulbs is higher than making halogens.
4) LED don't dim very well.
5) The light color varies by manufacturer. Everywhere I have LEDs they are different colors since I replace with different vendors each time. This is not warm white vs daylight. Warm white is not consistent. Daylight is not consistent.
6) LEDs get significantly dimmer as they age.

Let the consumer choose. Some places LEDs work for me in other places they don't. So far every M16 12V GU5.3 LED I have tried is a FAIL! And I have tried dozens of them.

BTW, this is even worse for landscape lighting. The LEDs die in three years. Halogens last ten.
